Pink Tickets and Free Bus Rides For Women on DTC Buses By Dakshaa A right holds little value if it lacks respect and recognition within society. Women travelling on Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses often experience this lack of respect and recognition of their rights from other passengers which undermines their sense of empowerment. Women’s struggle doesn’t begin on the bus, rather it begins at the bus-stand when the driver spots a woman or a group of women waiting. He may choose not to stop the bus and drive straight past them, sometimes even making them run after it which is risky and unsafe. Afterall she is a free-rider so why care? In a group of ticket buyers, a woman will be made to wait to be given her ‘pink ticket’ until all the ticket buyers are given their tickets. After all she is a free-rider so why care? Accept women drivers According to a French study, women drive safer than men. (Photo: File) Begum, you are also amazing, you can’t do enough to bring the children from school. I don’t know when you will learn driving and what will you do if you learn it? Leaving these few sentences aside, sometimes I get to hear from my colleagues in my office that, oh man, I’m not going anywhere with you, you just give me the car keys and I’ll drive myself because your driving is not good. No trust. Women are often discriminated against when it comes to driving, let alone on a busy road, when the road is empty, unnecessary honking is done. Women drivers are deliberately honked at and harassed and sometimes overtaken. All this is our negative attitude. Traffic rules are the same for everyone and the road is also for everyone, so why the difference between drivers? Maybe we have not been able to change our traditional thinking till now that no my sister or wife can’t drive a car. There is no confidence in it or that I am the one for this work. These are all excuses that are very easy to make. If there is any emergency and there is a car in the house, should the women wait for their husbands or sons to come or should they drive the car themselves and take care of things. I am not talking only about women drivers who have their own vehicles, there are many countries in the world where women are also driving taxis. There is a taxi service in Mumbai that claims to have all female drivers on their team, but they are also trained in martial arts to deal with any mishaps. Pakistan’s first woman taxi driver is 53-year-old Shamim Akhtar. He made his first journey from Rawalpindi to Azad Kashmir. First she used to drive a taxi, later she also drove a truck. Earlier women were not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia but not anymore. The modern state concept has played an important role in making women independent and mainstreaming in Saudi Arabia. Now women can drive here too and many people have liked their photos on social media. There are also many interesting facts about women’s driving. The Dubai government had said that since women have children with them, they need more care while driving. The government there also decided to fine up to 1000 dirhams for women who wear make-up while driving. South Korea has also provided special parking for its women, where better lighting is provided and to park a car, it is not necessary to park the car only in reverse. But the question remains that rules and laws are also made by people like us and unless our thinking changes, mere laws do not matter. We need to give confidence to our women. They can also prove to be decent and responsible citizens on the road. But we have to expand and change our thinking. Sonal Shah (She/ her) writes in TrafficInfraTech Magazine: A gender-responsive mobility system can strengthen the right to the city for women, girls and gender minorities by enabling access to employment, education, health facilities and markets. It can translate to increased use of public transport, improve sustainability of transport projects and enable women’s workforce participation. Transport plays a pivotal role in reshaping women's participation in the workforce and fostering equal opportunities for all. Yet, in Asia, transportation systems often fail to be gender-neutral, burdening individuals differently based on their gender identity. Technology-driven innovations like ride-hailing, carpooling, and bike-sharing are expanding transport choices, paving the way for more equitable and accessible mobility for all. Ever wished for a safer, more comfortable way to commute? Uber just made that wish come true for women in Bengaluru. They’ve launched ‘Uber Moto Women,’ a women-only bike ride service. Female riders. Female drivers. A complete focus on 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐲. And it’s more than just a service. It’s a step toward empowering women, making mobility safer, and showing that innovation doesn’t just solve problems—it creates possibilities. Here’s why this matters: In cities where women often hesitate to travel alone, this initiative says, “𝐖𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮.” It’s not just about the ride; it’s about the journey—towards independence, freedom, and equality. What do you think about this step? Could this be the change we need to create more inclusive public spaces? Drop your thoughts below. Let’s celebrate the wins that matter! #Uber #WomenEmpowerment #SafeCommute #InnovationForChange #UberMotoWomen #InclusiveMobility

Pink Seats for Women! Amidst severe women atrocities going on, IndiGo (InterGlobe Aviation Ltd) initiative made my day. They have introduced a new seat selection feature aimed at enhancing the comfort and safety of female passengers. Here are two unique points about this initiative which you must know: 1. Gender-based seating option: IndiGo now allows women to view the gender of potential seatmates during the web check-in process. Female travelers can select seats next to other women, marked with pink icons, ensuring they have the option to avoid sitting beside male strangers. 2. Industry-first initiative: This is the first time an airline has implemented such a feature, marking a significant step in prioritizing gender-specific safety in air travel. This initiative addresses growing concerns over in-flight safety for women, particularly solo travelers. This measure is expected to reduce anxiety and improve the overall travel experience for female passengers by giving them more control over their seating arrangements. Moreover, this feature is currently in a pilot phase, and its impact on the industry will be closely watched as per the company’s representative. However, though this aligns with IndiGo's "#GirlPower ethos," the policy has sparked debate regarding potential gender discrimination. I do not see any negative aspect in this initiative though and would strongly urge other airline companies to do the same. I would love to know your views on it in the comment section 🔻 Article Link: https://lnkd.in/gbeTbJjE Picture Credit: @tatvaindia on Instagram

🚗🏍️ Empowering Women, Enhancing Travel Experience In a country like Pakistan where women still hold less than 25% of the workforce share, I believe it's time for ride-hailing services to take a major step in Pakistan: introducing a women driver preference option! 🌟 This would allow female passengers to choose women drivers for both cars and motorcycles, offering a more comfortable experience for many. Moreover, with the growing trend of women driving motorcycles in Pakistan, this option could be a more affordable and convenient alternative for women, expanding access to cost-effective transportation with ever-increasing fuel costs. It's not only a step towards respecting consumer preferences, but also an incredible opportunity to support women drivers, empowering them economically and creating a more inclusive workforce. While there may be complexities during implementation, an initiative along these lines is both timely and necessary which can be a win-win situation for both ends of the market. Let’s work together to make ride-hailing more accessible, affordable, and inclusive for everyone. 🚀 Careem Uber inDrive #WomenEmpowerment #RideHailing #GenderEquality #WomenInTheWorkforce
