Special Report: Liquid Cooling in the Data Center is a Good Thing It’s official: the data center industry has entered the Era of Liquid Cooling. The new DCF Special Report by Contributing Editor Bill Kleyman 🇺🇦 explores what this statement means. The report dispels some new liquid immersion cooling myths and discusses how operators can adapt these technologies to their facilities. In the first article of the series for this downloadable report, Kleyman writes: "The exponential growth in computational demands of large-scale (and small-scale) AI systems requires an immediate paradigm shift in data center design. To that point, we have all become users AI. None of this is a fad. AI is poised to drive a 160% increase in data center power demand and will use 8% of US power by 2030, compared with 3% in 2022. In terms of infrastructure design to support this massive growth, one fact is clear: Our data centers have run out of air. Leaders must turn to some liquid cooling solution to dissipate all of this newly generated heat and create greater density levels. This is SO cool! Late last week, I spoke in front of a class of middle—and upper-class students at Bennett Day School in downtown Chicago! Emily Fields was kind enough to gather all sorts of students, and we dove into what we do at the Nomad Futurist Foundation, what it means to work in the digital infrastructure industry, and how so many skill sets could be applied to our space. The students were very engaged, too. One student who wants to major in civil engineering asked how her future studies could be applied to the data center industry. I told her that her expertise could help us build everything from roads to water systems, which help support some of the most advanced data in architecture in the world. Another student asked about marketing, branding, and video making. I told him that a big part of what we’re trying to do is become more visible in this world. Many data center leaders take the time to create visually stunning marketing and branding materials. I referenced the video which I showed in class demonstrating the Aligned Data Centers (Phill Lawson-Shanks) facilities, and I talked about my experience with the extraordinary marketing and video-making team at my previous company, Switch (Josh Meeter). Finally, one of the seniors, Brosnan, is brilliant at machine learning and coding. He’s already an intern at Apolo, creating configuration tools to help data centers become AI powerhouses! Keep those brilliant minds coming our way, we’ll find great places for them. I had a blast :) Most of all, I enjoyed inspiring these students so that they could see a clear path and career in our industry. I recently saw Luke Norris's post on the muted response from this industry regarding one of the largest planned obsolescences of the largest CAPEX purchases in technology history. Honestly, we've been doing the math behind the scenes for almost a year and realized that Apolo competes on way more than just GPU/hour. So, we pivoted very early. In finding our market, we continued to see massive GPU Rental business, or GPU market aggregators, popping up... and being funded. Because this industry has seen growth unlike any other in our history, the risks associated with this growth are equal in weight. I was struck by the latest podcast episode from David McCall and Bill Kleyman 🇺🇦 on The QTS Experience; two stand-up humans and leaders in our industry that I happen to have the pleasure of calling friends. The entire episode is a must-listen! https://lnkd.in/gm5tUdNe A couple takeaways from Bill's comments: 1. “What does it take to be successful for a data center in this industry? Power and #bravery.” I hear this expressed in many different ways across the industry, but the core message is always the same: We are in a transition, and transitions require innovative solutions for all critical facets of the data center. Bravery begets innovation. As an industry, speed is more important than ever before. Those that adapt and innovate with speed will survive and succeed (it rhymes, so you know it’s true)! 2. “What we are experience right now in this industry are known as micro shifts; a shift in the data center space every 30-60 days.” Microshift. A perfect word for what we’re seeing more and more in the data infrastructure industry. Now is the time to be not just a lifelong learner, but a DAILY learner. Take the time to keep up with the latest and constantly be educating yourself. 3. "Vision without execution is just hallucination ... find your vision and execute on it. Otherwise, it's just a dream." Nailed it, Bill. Find solid partners, and find the forward-thinking individuals who will help you execute your projects. We cannot lead the industry into the future alone. Collaboration with strategic partners is key right now. My final takeaways are that if you haven’t already, dive in. Jump into the industry with eyes wide open! Become a part of the incredible growth. Be ready for change and discomfort. Stay steadfast in your goals and collectively, we can both affect and drive change in the industry. This is a very exciting time to be in #datacenters!
