About us
The Arc of Texas is the oldest and largest nonprofit organization in the state committed to creating opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to be included in their communities and to make the choices which affect their lives in a positive manner. The Arc supports families, advances public policies, provides training programs, and builds a statewide network of advocates. Since our founding in 1953 by a group of parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, The Arc of Texas has been instrumental in the creation of virtually every program, service, right, and benefit that is now available to more than half a million Texans with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Today, The Arc continues to advocate for including people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in all aspects of society. Read more about our history and major accomplishments.

Our very own Veronica Ayala is featured in "What It’s Like to Be a Poll Worker With a Disability," from Mother Jones by @julia-metraux Check it out! https://ow.ly/ChyJ50U5LAs "The county calls me back every time, so I must be doing something right. I’m a person with a disability. You may not be able to tell, but when I get up and move, you can tell. Knowing that someone with a disability is in that location makes them more comfortable with the idea of coming in and exercising their right to vote, because someone in there understands and will help them cast their ballot in a safe, secure way without any judgment." -- Veronica Ayala, The Arc of Texas Board President-Elect #election2024 #disabilityvote #disabilityrights #disabilityjournalism

🚨 Contact your Texas Senator by Wednesday or testify in person! The Senate Health and Human Services Committee will hold a hearing this Wednesday at 9am (Hearing Room E1.028 at the Texas Capitol) to review emergency preparedness protocols for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities living in group homes, intentional communities, and integrated community settings, and assess how plans can be improved to better protect these populations during severe weather or emergencies. Learn more and find your senator here: https://ow.ly/hNgV50U4KCI Your voice is powerful and necessary. Share your personal story or use our suggested language: "Thank you for prioritizing the safety of people with IDD in the committee’s review of emergency preparedness. As a supporter of The Arc of Texas, I urge the committee to ensure that emergency plans address the unique needs of people with IDD, whether they live in integrated community settings, group homes, or other residential facilities. These plans must include clear evacuation procedures, communication support, and caregiver training to ensure their safety. It is essential that these protocols be enforced in all settings to guarantee the protection of people with IDD during severe weather or emergencies." #txlege #IDD #advocacyinaction #disabilityrights
