We mourn the loss of Samuel Salvage Polk, known to his friends and colleagues as “Sam.” He served on the board of The Trust from 1999 to 2016 and as its chair from 2004 to 2008. Sam was a valued advisor, a trusted attorney, a thoughtful philanthropist, and a visionary leader. We will remember his warmth, quiet generosity, and crucial contributions to supporting our region. Studio Museum in Harlem was founded in 1968 with a mission to provide artists of African descent with a space to create and exhibit their art. Since its opening, the Museum’s Artist-in-Residence program has offered private studio spaces and stipends to visual artists. 🎨 Alumni of the program include David Hammons, Kerry James Marshall, and Kehinde Wiley. Thanks to its donors, The Trust has supported the Studio Museum with millions of dollars in grants. 📸: The Studio Museum in Harlem’s Expanding the Walls: Making Connections through Photography, History, and Community program. Let’s celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth with the story of two extraordinary sisters, Bessie and Sadie Delany! These Harlem heroines created a fund at The Trust that opens the doors to education, champions civil and human rights, and takes a stand against systemic racism. The Delany Sisters, lifelong companions & activists, lit the way for future generations. We collaborated with Jai The Sketch Guy to explore their century-long adventure in this comic! It is heartening to see The New York Times focusing on affordability and lifting up the voices of some The New York Community Trust grantees working on this issue. Special shoutouts to Anthos|Home, Center for New York City Neighborhoods, Citizens Housing & Planning Council, The Legal Aid Society, Neighborhood Restore HDFC, and Women In Need, Inc. (Win) (just to name a few) who are actively championing many of the solutions in this piece. Increasing our state’s supply of affordable housing will require a myriad of zoning and regulatory reforms that allow for new housing production where it is currently stagnant. However, market solutions alone will not save us and calls for widescale deregulation are harmful and shortsighted. Maintaining strong tenant protections and investing in the preservation of our city’s existing affordable housing, including public housing, must remain key priorities. https://lnkd.in/ecgrGrQt
