The Terminator Predicted our Fears and The Dark Side of AI, 40 years ago. Many AI researchers resent the Terminator obsession altogether for exaggerating the existential risk of AI at the expense of more immediate dangers such as mass unemployment, disinformation and autonomous weapons. "First, it makes us worry about things that we probably don't need to fret about," writes Michael Woolridge. "But secondly, it draws attention away from those issues raised by AI that we should be concerned about." The philosopher Nick Bostrom, whose 2014 book Superintelligence popularised the existential risk of "unaligned AI" (AI that is not aligned with human values and wellbeing). There are more recent, and more plausible, influential films about AI, including Ex Machina and Her, but when it comes to the dangers of the technology, The Terminator reigns supreme 40 years after its release. The Terminator, then, is a thriller, a love story, a time-hopping rumination on free will and a satire about our dependence on technology. It is anti-corporate, anti-war, anti-gun and largely anti-machine. The Terminator would become one of the most profitable films of all time, grossing $78.4m. His lead actor Schwarzenegger, a former bodybuilder of unproven talent, did not have high hopes. In the 1920s, it stood to reason that machine intelligence would walk and talk, like Frankenstein's monster. The popularity of lethal robots led the science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov, in 1942, to draw up the "three laws of robotics": the first ever attempt to define ethical AI. In the real world, the field of artificial intelligence officially began in 1956 at a summer school at Dartmouth University, organised by computer scientists John McCarthy (who coined the term) and Marvin Minsky. Their ambition was to design machines that could think like humans, but this proved much harder than they had imagined. The history of AI is one of boom and bust: a cycle of so-called "AI springs" and "AI winters". 5 Things Not To Say to a Grieving Friend: No. 1: ‘How are you? No. 2: ‘How can I help? Here’s something that worked really well: neighbors who, without asking, dropped off a tray of lasagna or cookies or flowers or fill-in-the-blank. One helpful friend showed up at my house and immediately rolled up her sleeves and started doing my sink full of dishes. She didn’t ask. She just dived in. No. 3: ‘I can’t imagine what you must be going through’ Say something like, “I remember when I lost my X and I felt X”. Or maybe share a specific memory like “I really enjoyed watching your dad coach you in soccer. I’m going to miss that.” No. 4: ‘This is so unfair’ No. 5: ‘I want to come give you a hug’ What to say when there are no words: What worked beautifully for us was receiving a lovingly composed letter, email or text, expressing someone’s emotions. Man's six-year hunt to expose Al Fayed abuse A man has described how he helped expose "seismic" rape and sexual assault allegations about Mohamed Al Fayed after his fiancee told him she was a victim of the Harrods billionaire. Keaton Stone spent years speaking to women around the world, gathering a "damning" dossier of evidence. He took that to the BBC in 2023 and helped to make the documentary, Al Fayed: Predator at Harrods. His now wife, Sophia Stone, had been a personal assistant to the businessman after joining Harrods at 19. Since the documentary, the team have been "inundated" with more survivors coming forward, and Mr Stone believes there are now more than 100 of them. "We desperately didn't want another [Jimmy] Savile situation - we wanted him in jail. "How big it was meant that it took as long as it did, and sadly he did die, but it's still of overwhelming importance to the survivors that the world knows the truth about him." Mr Stone also hopes the revelations will help ensure those who facilitated Al Fayed's actions will be held to account. STOP The Hatred. Stop Fear Mongering. Stop Crazy FALSE Conspiracy Theories. Stop FALSE Deepfakes. How hurricane conspiracy theories took over social media A deluge of misinformation online about back-to-back hurricanes in the US has been fuelled by a social media universe that rewards engagement over truth. Viral posts have ranged from seemingly innocuous questions about the legitimacy of forecasts and rescue efforts, to false claims - repeated by Donald Trump - that hurricane relief funds are being spent on migrants who entered the US illegally. Others spread false images of the wreckage - faked pictures of children fleeing devastation that were generated by artificial intelligence (AI), old clips showing different storms or computer-generated (CGI) videos. And then there were those who shared false and evidence-free conspiracy theories about the government manipulating - or “geo-engineering”- the weather. “Yes they can control the weather,” wrote Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene last week on X. She tells me how “a well informed collective is much harder to control”. In other words, the more people who believe these kinds of evidence-free conspiracy theories, the harder it is to combat them. This ultimately comes down to the way the algorithms across social media sites favour engagement above all else. These conspiracy theories, false claims and hate can reach hundreds of thousands of people before anyone realises they’re are untrue - and those sharing them can be rewarded with views, likes, followers or money in return. Google’s search dominance is shrinking. Google will remain the biggest search player, maintaining a 48% share of American search advertising revenue. Amazon next year will control nearly a quarter of US search ad dollars. Google is the fourth-most-valuable public company on the planet. At $2.1 trillion, its market value trails only Apple, Microsoft and AI chip darling Nvidia. The company lost another ruling in August, when a federal judge found Google is operating an illegal monopoly in search. That ruling could result in the eventual breakup of the company’s search business. TikTok, the fastest growing social network, is getting into into the search business. And Amazon has done something few other tech giants have managed up to this point: create a habit. When you want to buy something, you typically go to Amazon — not Google. In the United States alone, it’s forecast to bring in $27.8 billion in search revenue next year, second only to Google’s $62.9 billion, according to eMarketer. Google is working on exactly this technology with its Gemini product, but its success is by no means secured — especially with Apple partnering with OpenAI and other companies quickly entering the market. Google’s in no threat of vanishing. But all massively dominant companies have a reckoning of some sort over time. GE, a Dow mainstay for more than a century, broke up last year and is a shell of its former dominant self. Sears went bankrupt in 2022 and is practically out of business. US Steel, once the backbone of American industry, is trying to sell itself to a Japanese company. Decades from now, could we look back at Google the way we do Yahoo or Ask Jeeves? Identify which Common Comfort Zones that can hold You back: • Age: Believing that certain activities or relationships are only for specific age groups. • Religion: Limiting interactions to people of the same faith. “I rather do business only people from my own religion." • False Hope: Relying on unproven promises of a better future or heaven, often tied to religious beliefs. • Family: Over-reliance on family support, which can hinder independence. Many children are too sheltered and they don't survive in the real world. • Fantasy: Escaping into imaginary worlds instead of facing reality. Building castles int the air is exhilarating, but it is falsehood. • Gender: Stereotyping based on gender. "I only support women empowerment groups." "I never trust a women boss!" • Hometown: Staying in a familiar place, limiting exposure to new experiences. Many people don't care to have a passport, or to venture outside one's hometown. • Personality Disorders: Using personality disorders as excuses to avoid challenges. • Physical Limitations: Believing that physical attributes prevent success. "I’m too fat, too short, too ugly, too poor, etc." • Poverty: Accepting limitations due to financial circumstances. • Sleep: Prioritizing sleep over other activities, leading to missed opportunities. • Movie Genre: Sticking to familiar movie genres, limiting exposure to new perspectives. • Race: Limiting interactions to people of the same race. • Low Self-Esteem: Surrounding oneself with people who share low self-esteem. People of low self esteem tend to keep the company of other people with low self esteem. • Social Status: Associating only with people of the same social class. The rich mixes with the rich, the poor mixes with the poor. "I can't marry her, she is not from my high caste system!"
