If you want to use a smartwatch to collect data on ocean health and conditions, you have to figure out the accuracy of the sensors on it. So I took my smartwatch on an oceanographic research cruise to find out. The result, the temperature sensor on the Apple Watch Ultra is accurate to 0.5°C. Larger than expected, but we also used the watch in an unexpected way. This is something that is supposed to be attached to a human for diving, and we sent it deeper and faster than a human can dive with a boat winch. But here is the good news, the temperature error isn't random. Which means, with a little math, we can remove the error and improve the accuracy. This leads us to our next step in R&D, where we are already designing experiments to understand the cause of the error and then develop the code to correct it. While it was superfun to get out on the water, I am really looking forward to creating awesome software to supercharge off-the-shelf sensors for oceanography! https://lnkd.in/gEDvFrXa #oceanography #oceansensors #CTD #AppleWatch #AppleWatchUltra
