🟢 𝙀𝙙𝙙𝙞𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙜𝙤. We are a green light at Waimea Bay today for the #EddieAikau Invitational. 🏄♀️ In the world of sports, very few iconic competitions have a 3-month window during which they could run - the Rip Curl #Eddie is an elusive and prestigious diamond, a rare occurrence to which only the most prestigious surfers are invited. 💎 🏄 Eddie Aikau was a legendary waterman, a lifeguard on the North Shore who saved 500+ lives with his surf skills - when the conditions were at their worst, "Eddie would go" when and where others wouldn't. In 1978 at 31 years old, his crew was precariously stranded when their boat capsized in the open ocean. Eddie paddled towards Lanai to seek help, and while the crew were ultimately rescued, Eddie never returned. 🌺 If you are lucky enough to spend time in #Hawaii, you will inevitably see people with bumper stickers, shirts, and hats saying "𝙀𝙙𝙙𝙞𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙜𝙤." It means service, sacrifice, and people above all else. 🌊 A nod to its legendary namesake, the conditions of the Eddie Aikau promises those who want the ride months of quiet waiting, while always remaining ready to go at a moment's notice. 🌈 Huge thanks to the exec production team at Spectrum Sports and Charter Communications for taking my #SportsLaw class BTS to see how the sausage (TV) is made up close during the University of Hawaii at Manoa Men's Basketball game this week. 🏀 📺 This unprecedented backstage access to the production truck was a first for University of Hawai'i at Manoa - William S. Richardson School of Law and shows students the real-life execution of the deals we make in the #sportsbiz. I continue to shout from the mountaintops 🌋 that as educators, we can't teach in a vacuum; we must strive to build practical, sharp, intuitive practitioners who are "in the boat" with both the business and its leaders (thank you, ABA Journal and ABA Young Lawyers Division for helping Erin Rhinehart and I amplify this lesson). 🎬 Special mahalos to Rebecca Lieberman and EP Dan Schmidt as well as Dean Nicholas Mirkay and of course Dean Camille Nelson for encouraging the development of this trailblazing sports and media curriculum. But Netflix won’t charge a “top up” for this – will it pan out? Will this be a model that works as audiences’ tolerance for PPV fees starts to fall down? 💰 🌍 𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙗𝙞𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙗𝙚?🌍 The event will be accessible to Netflix's 280 million subscribers globally at no extra charge.
