During one of the Peer-to-Peer groups leading up to this year's Total Tech Summit, someone shared The Helsinki Bus Station Theory, and it’s really stuck with me. I can’t recall who mentioned it, but to whoever it was, thank you! Dan Ferrisi, maybe you can recall? Anyway , the idea, introduced by photographer Arno Rafael Minkkinen, compares creative work to buses leaving a station in Helsinki. At first, all the buses take the same route, stopping at the same places. This is like when your work feels similar to others, and you start getting compared to them. Many people get frustrated, “get off the bus,” and start something new. But if you stay on the bus, the routes eventually diverge, and each one heads to a unique destination. The takeaway? Stick with it. Over time, your work will naturally stand out as your own. The key is to commit, keep improving, and trust the process, even when things feel repetitive or discouraging. This idea resonated with me and our team at Hillman Audio Video Incorporated. It’s not about constantly switching directions or chasing trends, it’s about refining what we’re already good at and building on that foundation. That’s what leads to meaningful, lasting work.
