“I was married. We got married in ‘89. She was a lovely wife. Unfortunately, she passed away in 2010. She had cancer. She passed away while I was at work in the movie theater. It was about 3:30 in the morning when I got the news. I cried and cried. Now, when I see people in the hospital, I feel for them, you know? If they want to talk, I’ll stop and listen. Join us in celebrating humanKIND winner, Sandi Stercks, Food Unit Lead in Elwood, Indiana! Sandi was leaving for the day and found an injured dog lying in the hospital parking lot that had been in a fight with another dog. It was injured and needed medical attention, but no one would take it. Sandi called the dog catcher, but they would not respond and take responsibility for the vet bill. Sandi took the dog to the vet, which required $400 to have the dog treated. Sandi then found the dog's owners, who eventually came and took the dog from her house. Sandi went out of her way to assist when no one would step up. A patient's family recognized Terell for his compassion and heart-filled soul by simply showing what it means to care for others beyond measure in a time of need. "Terell is one of the most compassionate young men I have ever encountered, and Ascension is fortunate to have him on staff. When my mother-in-law was being prepared for surgery, she, along with our entire family, was extremely anxious. Terell came to transport her to the operating room, and she requested prayer right then and there. I was overwhelmed with emotion and knew I would struggle to cope. I asked Terell if he prayed, and he responded affirmatively. He then agreed to pray for us and took the time to comfort and support not just my mother-in-law but our entire family. He held her hand while I held the other and delivered one of the most heartfelt prayers we have ever experienced. The comfort and peace he provided were beyond words.
