  • What seems like a simple story has so many layers to digest. Read it, then read it again. First of all, thank you to Chris Tottman who did a fabulous job distilling the events into a powerful story arc! Second, just imagine that three day conversation. Really try to marinate in what they might have discussed and how they may have bonded. And finally, ponder the scope of mindfulness it would take to set aside egos, extract lessons from past mistakes and imagine the unbound universe of possibilities through strategic collaboration. Here's what happened when Instagram was 2 hours away from signing with Twitter: In 2012, Kevin Systrom sat in a Palo Alto law office, ready to sell Instagram to Twitter for $525M. The paperwork was drawn up. Jack Dorsey (who'd invested personally in Instagram) was getting what he wanted. Twitter would finally own the future of mobile photos. But then Systrom got a call. Mark Zuckerberg had heard about the deal through back channels. He invited Systrom to his house in Palo Alto. No lawyers. No bankers. Just two founders talking. The conversation lasted 3 days. Zuck's pitch wasn't just about money. It was about independence. He promised Systrom could run Instagram as a separate company, keep the team, and scale it with Facebook's infrastructure. The key? Zuck had learned from his Foursquare mistake. In 2010, Facebook tried to buy Foursquare for $140M. The deal collapsed because Zuck wanted to fold it into Facebook proper. This time was different. He'd let Instagram be Instagram. That promise of autonomy – plus a $1B price tag – made Systrom pause the Twitter deal. 72 hours later, Facebook announced the acquisition. Here's the wild part: The deal closed in 3 days. No investment bankers. No prolonged due diligence. Just a handshake and some quick paperwork. Instagram had 13 employees. No revenue. And Zuck paid roughly $77M per employee. But what happened next is the real lesson: Instagram hit 1B users by 2018 By 2020, it was worth $100B Today it drives over 40% of Meta's revenue The implications for founders: 1. Strategic buyers often pay more than financial buyers. Twitter wanted Instagram's photos. Facebook wanted to own mobile's future. 2. Negotiation leverage comes from competition. Systrom never meant to sell to Facebook. But Twitter's offer created the perfect storm. 3. Sometimes speed beats process. No bankers. No months of diligence. The right buyer at the right time can move mountains. 4. The best deals preserve founder autonomy. Zuck's promise to keep Instagram independent wasn't just good PR – it was key to scaling the product. Today, this deal is studied at HBS as the fastest billion-dollar acquisition in history. And it all started with a phone call that interrupted a signature.

Can you guess the best performing market for Endeavor Catalyst in our 12-year history, where we have invested in over 30+ countries? 💥 Would you believe it's #Türkiye -- with a nearly 11x cash-on-cash return! Most folks are surprised by this, but having spent 15+ years working with Turkish founders, I am not surprised one bit. Turkish founders are bold, ambitious, and resilient. They are truly some of the best in the world. Our first 6 investments in Türkiye a decade ago produced 5 exits, including incredible outcomes with Peak, Yemeksepeti, Airties, Foriba and iyzico. Since then, we've been proud to invest in companies like Insider., Picus Security, Marti Technologies (NYSE: MRT), Firefly, Dgpays, Akinon and others. The list goes on. Next week - on November 19th - I will join our friends at GTEN to talk about "The Rise of Emerging Markets and Positioning Turkish Entrepreneurs for Success." I will share some "secrets" that a small group of us in the global VC community know well: that investing in Turkish entrepreneurs - building both inside and outside of Türkiye - represents one of the very best risk-adjusted returns out there. Shout out to a few others who know this well: great angels like Melih Odemis, Erdem Yurdanur, Nevzat Aydin, Firat Isbecer and Magdalena Yesil; as well as VCs like Ali & Numan @ 212; Dilek @ ScaleX Ventures; Cem @ Bek Ventures; Cenk @ Revo Capital and Firat @ Hummingbird Ventures. (Not to mention my awesome teammates Pete Benedetto @ Endeavor Catalyst and Asli Kurul Turkmen and her team @ Endeavor Türkiye). 💡 Intrigued? Want to learn more? Tune in on Tuesday Nov 19th! 🔗 Link in the comments.

In case you missed this fantastic anomaly, how cool is it that Nasdaq celebrated two Turkish female-led companies on their Times Square billboard in the same week this month? Hats off to Hande Cilingir and her fantastic Insider. team for achieving their $500M Series E funding round. And congratulations to Piraye Beim and her pioneering Celmatix team for achieving the Sprint for Women's Health Award. Absolutely brilliant... Now these companies are too mature for pre-seed / seed funds like Treeo VC, but we build our fund knowing that more of this spectacular talent exists and needs to be supported from seedling to sapling to maturity to reproduction by an ecosystem that is also growing in strength and capacity... • On August 30th, 2024, our General Partner, Didem Altop, had the honor of representing Treeo VC as the moderator of the opening panel at this year’s Young Owners Forum hosted by Fast Company Türkiye in Bodrum. The panel, titled “Global Founders,” brought together some of Turkey's most innovative minds to explore the transformative impacts of AI and the global competitiveness of Turkish tech startups. The discussions were nothing short of inspiring, with key insights into how Turkish founders can leverage their unique strengths to compete on the world stage. 💡 Key Takeaways: The accelerating impact of AI across all business sectors. The importance of building diverse ecosystems for personal and professional growth. The strategic advantages of using Turkey as a hub for talent and innovation. The value of corporate-startup alliances as a competitive edge. The necessity of developing a US market strategy for global success. We’re incredibly proud to support the growth of Turkish tech startups and foster connections between the Turkish-American and American tech ecosystems. We invite you to dive into Didem’s full reflections from the event and discover how Treeo VC is helping Turkish founders make a global impact.
