Did you know that all economic activity in the ocean and the financing of ocean related activities is known as the ‘blue economy?’ 🌊  However, the commercial blue economy is focused on exploitation and does not recognise the true value of a healthy ocean. If the world wants to achieve protection for 30% of the ocean by 2030, we need to change how we value the ocean and where we direct finance.  We can do this by ensuring we stop treating the ocean like an endless free resource, and instead commit to protecting and restoring it to ensure sustainability for the life in and around it.  So, what is the blue economy? 🚢 Bringing the Maritime and Judicial Worlds Together: Turning Blue Stakeholder Meetings in the Netherlands 🌊 In March this year, the Dutch Turning Blue team— @PFA, ProSea, @ClickF1, and Stichting 180 — organized the first stakeholder meeting, connecting professionals from the maritime industry and the judiciary. The initiative aimed to foster connections, exchange insights, and explore potential collaborations. Looking ahead to March 2025, the plan is to intensify these efforts by organizing mini-excursions. These events will allow stakeholders to step into each other’s worlds, share perspectives, and identify opportunities for cooperation. The interest between these sectors is evident, and such interactions highlight that collaboration begins with meaningful engagement. 🗓️🤝 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗺, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀, 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. Among other topics, the first day was dedicated to discussing the project roadmap and reviewing the Turning Blue Awareness Training. The team presented the results of focus groups from Portugal and the Netherlands and closed on the final version of the course curriculum and training methodology. Discussions also covered the organisation of the pilot programmes which will take place in January next year, in both countries, paving the way for an impactful implementation. 🌊 The partnership also focused on the development of the Turning Blue Intervention Model, presenting the first proposals for the transition model and the job matching platform. 🙋↔️🚢 The last day included a visit to the Teylingereind Youth Prison in Sassenheim, which provided valuable insights into the practical applications of the project's goals and offered a firsthand look at the facilities and operations. 💧 In recent years, the #blueeconomy and #bluetechnology have emerged as promising sectors to address youth unemployment in the Mediterranean by creating jobs and promoting sustainable development. 📃 According to the latest report on 𝐁𝐋𝐔𝐄 𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐎𝐌𝐘 𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐌𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐄𝐀𝐍, it is estimated that over one million jobs in Mediterranean countries are located within the Blue Economy and that 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝟒𝟎% 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞, 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞. The report also highlighted that around 𝟏𝟕% 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐛𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬, indicating significant youth participation in this sector. However, the blue economy sector currently has the potential to welcome even more young workers, thanks to its rapid modernisation through digital platforms and technologies such as augmented reality and virtual reality, which are easily adaptable to different business sectors. 📌 Read the full report on: https://lnkd.in/dDn9ZDWZ
