Clinicians with 10+ hrs/week of caregiving responsibilities outside of work are at greater risk of burnout, found a new study in the Journal of American Board of Family Medicine. It is the first study to demonstrate the correlation. Female clinicians were found to be most at risk. They were twice as likely than male clinicians to report 20+ hrs of caregiving per week and reported greater emotional exhaustion than male clinicians. https://bit.ly/41EIszp Authors: Rachel Willard-Grace at UCSF | Center for Excellence in Primary Care, Kevin Grumbach, Eric McNey and Beatrice Huang

"Rich in Culture, Victorious through the Decades" - This was the theme of the UCSF Black Caucus' 33rd Annual Black Heritage Gala on Saturday night. We were thrilled to be an event sponsor and build community with other supporters of this incredible forum. The Black Caucus was founded in 1968 from the direct action of UCSF staff who advocated for change. #Primarycare takes care of half of all US healthcare needs and the public knows it. What it doesn’t know is that primary care is surviving on a shoestring budget - 10 times less than the public's estimate. Based on the groundbreaking study conducted by Bixby researchers, the show tells the behind-the-scenes story of the study with humor and candor. "I love my team. They are a fierce group of individuals whom I am proud to call colleagues and friends. I feel blessed to be on a team that cares about each other and the people we strive to help." This month, we're featuring Rebecca Kriz, MS, RN, program director for the Person-Centered Reproductive Health Program (PCRHP). In this interview, Beckie tells us about her role at PCRHP, her learnings from the UCSF Leadership Academy, and what she enjoys most about working at FCM. We also get a glimpse into Beckie's life outside of work and learn which 80's British new wave band she "just can't get enough" of. Read the article: https://bit.ly/3Xvy2jt

Earlier this month, our FCM teams gathered for the annual state of the department address delivered by our chair Megan Mahoney, MD, MBA. It was truly inspiring to hear about all the progress achieved by our department in 2024 and get a preview of what developments are in store for 2025. We also recognized several of our colleagues who go above and beyond, displaying exceptional dedication to advancing our mission. Congratulations to our Shine Award Winners, including those pictured here receiving their awards from our CAO Shanice Jackson: Amy Lee (pic 2), Sharon Keyes (pic 3), Emily Lo (pic 4), Hoa Su (pic 5), Yuri Cartier, MPH (pic 6) and Roy Johnston (pic 7). Other awardees included (but not pictured) Reina Delos Santos, Robin Young, and Kana Liang. An extra special highlight at the event was seeing our Family Health Center patient advisors and FCM community advisors. You’ll see our amazing community and patient advisors in the first few rows of the auditorium (in pic 1), just as their wisdom takes a front seat for all that we do at FCM. In pic 8, Megan Mahoney stands with community advisors Dr. Monique LeSarre, Dr. Angela Gallegos-Castillo, and Joyce Cheng. In the midst of the country’s political and climatic maelstrom, SIREN's 2025 National Research Meeting in San Diego last week provided a much-needed reprieve. It felt restorative to be surrounded by people driving to improve health equity in the US. Our team certainly appreciated the opportunity to dive deeply into the increasingly rigorous field of health services and policy research related to social care -- and to simultaneously think together about the many challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. We have returned to work buoyed by the degree to which all attendees and speakers leaned in, lifting both each other’s spirits and work. For those who were not able to join us in person this year, fear not! We plan to release many conference materials in days ahead, including audio/ slides from our research presenters as well as keynote videos and podcasts. As these become available, we will signpost where to find them in the SIREN Evidence and Resource Library. —The SIREN Team Laura Gottlieb, Caroline Fichtenberg, Danielle Hessler Jones, Holly Wing, Yuri Cartier, MPH, Alejandra González-Rocha, & Dylnne Gonzalez
