We're excited to announce the publication of Dr Mark Fisher’s book, A Land Before Humans, a Land After Humans, on 28th February 2025. A retired scientist, Dr Mark Fisher has a background in farming, farmed red deer research, and a narrative insight into animal ethics and philosophy. “Some species survive reliant on conservation, some may survive eluding our knowing, some may not survive despite our efforts, and some may survive by adapting to and integrating with human worlds.” New Zealand is a unique and fascinating country as a case study for managing invasive species. Because of its history, we know a lot about species introductions, and because of its geographical position, as a relatively small remote island, the potential for dealing with invasive species may be more effective than elsewhere. Moreover, the fragility of its ecosystems makes it relatively easy to see the impact of one species upon another. The issue is a complex and interesting one. There are ethical considerations – which species are protected, and which destroyed? How are they destroyed? What are the unforeseen consequences? There are also tensions between preservation and the use of natural resources, and ultimately our relationship to the environment, how we live. A Land Before Humans, a Land After Humans is an invaluable resource for environment, ecology, animal welfare and ethics students, researchers and policy makers. The book takes New Zealand as a case study and looks at the practical and ethical considerations of dealing with invasive species. ‘A fine, bright and wise book’ – Professor Jules Pretty, Professor of Environment and Society, University of Essex A Land Before Humans, a Land After Humans is available for pre-order on Amazon and on 5mbooks.com at the links below. Nic Renison on Saturday's Farming Today (about 7m 20s in) from the Oxford Real Farming Conference talking about Nethergill Associates' concept of Maximum Sustainable Output (MSO). Nic was a panelist on the Future for Sustainable Farming session, along with Chris Clark and Pasture for Life's Johnnie Balfour and chaired by Barnaby Coupe. More and more farmers are discovering that farming with nature can not only help restore lost wildlife and habitats but can also help farms to become more environmentally sustainable, more resilient to unbudgeted events, and more profitable. The path to this better future is encapsulated in the concept of maximum sustainable output (MSO). The principles behind MSO have been set out in Less is More published by the RSPB, Farming at The Sweet Spot published by The Wildlife Trusts and Nature Friendly Farming Network, and will be developed further in the forthcoming 5m Books Ltd publication The Profitable Farm — Balancing Business, Nature and Energy through MSO - out this April. https://lnkd.in/eHAfSzrS #ORFC #MSO #sustainablefarming #profitable Vicki Hird Martin Lines

There are many inspiring individuals working hard to protect the planet and the human rights of people in countries across the world. This includes activists who are desperately trying to draw attention to the drastic need to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, often being imprisoned in the process; agroecologists working hard to create regenerative food and farming systems; those who are protecting and nurturing ecosystems; people creating social enterprise projects; individuals and organisations focused on food security and welfare, the list goes on. We’ll soon reveal the top 5 people who are inspiring Unbreaking right now and why. Let’s champion those who are dedicated to Unbreaking our systems and our planet. Tell us who’s inspiring you… 5m Books Ltd Jeremy Toynbee #climateaction #climateactivism #climatejustice #socialjustice #humanrights #equalrights #equality #fairshare #systemsthinking #regeneration #foodsecurity #welfare

Today is World Soil Day! In September this year, Alscot Estate embarked on a journey to transition its 705 hectares (ha) in-house holding from conventional to regenerative agriculture, focusing on practices that enhance soil organic matter (SOM) and overall soil health. Regenerative agriculture is increasingly seen as a sustainable response to food security challenges and environmental degradation, with practices that enrich soils, improve water retention, increase soil biodiversity, and store carbon. We are currently working with partners and sponsors to create a soil health baselining study. This will pave the way for monitoring of the soil health journey to regenerative agriculture and enable an evidence-based story to be told about the transition. The soil health baselining involves a comprehensive sampling strategy, focusing on soil organic matter, soil texture, biological activity, and water infiltration metrics. To mark World Soil Day #5mBooks are making the Six Inches of Soil book free to read online for the day. Having read the book, and shown the film ourselves to a large audience as an indroduction to soil health, we can't recommend it highly enough. #worldsoilday #5mbooks #soilhealth Unbreaking
