Congratulations to Brianna Vickerman, PhD, for making Forbes’ prestigious 30 Under 30 list for her groundbreaking light-activated therapeutics technology! Throughout her journey as an innovator, Brianna collaborated with Innovate Carolina’s Office of Technology Commercialization and KickStart Venture Services' Venture Catalyst Program as both a Fellow when she was a post-doc and now as an Innovator as Assistant Professor at Eshelman Innovation. Brianna also participated in the NSF regional I-Corps program to get real data on the best way to commercialize her innovation. Last week, I had the privilege of touring one of our incredible labs where groundbreaking research is transforming global health. Dr. Jeffrey Stringer, division director of Global Women's Health in the School of Medicine, and his interdisciplinary team are working to expand prenatal care access in low-resource areas. With recent funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, their work integrates AI algorithms into the software of low-cost ultrasound devices. This technological advancement is revolutionizing pregnancy care by expanding the ability of untrained providers to use simple devices to accurately estimate gestational age and make critical diagnoses. This is Carolina at its best — driving innovation and improving lives around the world. Thank you, Vice Chancellor for Research Penny Gordon-Larsen and UNC Research, for this remarkable experience.
