The United Nations Development Programme in Asia and the Pacific
About us
Development challenges in Asia and the Pacific are as diverse and complex as the region itself. It has some of the youngest democracies and some of the world’s most dynamic economies, but it is also home to more than half the world’s poor. It is the most disaster-prone region in the world, with small island developing states in the Pacific bearing the brunt of climate change. Meanwhile, concerns about environmental degradation are increasingly relevant for some of the fastest growing economies in the region. To respond to these challenges, UNDP concentrates its efforts on building the region’s capacity to promote inclusive, pro-poor growth, effective governance, and sustainable and resilient development. We help our partners in identifying relevant solutions to today’s complex, trans-boundary development challenges. We support them to design and implement large scale development initiatives that deliver lasting social, economic and environmental improvements in countries across the region. UNDP provides support to governments to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals into their national development plans and policies. This work is already underway, as we support many countries in accelerating progress already achieved under the Millennium Development Goals.

After a successful APFSD 2025 side event: Leaving No One Behind, organized by UNDP, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC and Japan - The Government of Japan, key experts and partners came together to discuss how Japan’s decades of investment in disaster risk reduction—spanning from emergency response to #TsunamiPreparedness in schools—are helping to build a more resilient #AsiaPacific. One key initiative is the regional Tsunami Project, which has engaged 220,000+ students, teachers, local officials, and community members in evacuation drills and disaster preparedness training, ensuring communities are better equipped to respond when disaster strikes. A huge thank you to our speakers and partners for sharing their insights and commitments to ensuring no one is left behind. 💡 What key lessons stood out to you from the event? The Ciliwung River in Indonesia is a lifeline for over 3.8 million people, supporting agriculture, livelihoods, and transportation. It irrigates 333 hectares of rice fields and plays a key role in the country’s renowned tea plantations. However, pollution from domestic and industrial waste poses a growing threat to this vital waterway. Tackling these challenges requires strong governance, collaborative community engagement, and sustainable waste management solutions. Through the Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM) Project, we are working to implement sustainable solutions that will help protect and restore the health and vitality of the Ciliwung River. 📖 Learn more: https://bit.ly/435Awsi #IRBMProject #CiliwungRiver #SustainableDevelopment #WaterGovernance Global Environment Facility UNDP in Asia and the Pacific The ASEAN Secretariat
