The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian is featuring two gowns worn by Oscar-nominated actor Lily Gladstone (Blackfeet/Nez Perce) in a special installation called “Making a Statement.” The exhibition opens to the public on February 28 and will run until March 2026, with four public programs scheduled for March 2025. The gowns, custom-made collaborations between Gucci and Indigenous artist Joe Big Mountain (Mohawk/Cree/Comanche) of Ironhorse Quilwork, were worn by Gladstone during the 96th Academy Awards ceremony and the Vanity Fair Oscars party. https://ow.ly/Gnnb50V5lwa

What do climate policymakers have to learn from Indigenous people? Quite a bit, according to Casey Thornbrugh, climate science liaison for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. The Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown, Mass., hosted Thornbrugh recently to discuss the history of his nation and the climate resiliency practices they and other Indigenous people have lived by for thousands of years. https://ow.ly/rWVS50V6as6

The Nansemond Indian Nation will open its second medical clinic in Newport News on March 1. It’s the latest in a fast-moving plan to expand the Tribal Nation's medical footprint to vulnerable communities across the region, and there are more clinic locations on the horizon. https://ow.ly/HwPA50V5lpO

The Catawba Indian Nation's food sovereignty program is benefitting from efforts to cull the deer population in the region. A nearby city donated venison to the Tribal Nation, and over the weekend the line for the meat counter wrapped around the inside of the Nation's food distribution center. https://ow.ly/wYnO50V5BSj

This afternoon, the Senate will begin the Budget Reconciliation process. During this fast-track process, the Senate will vote on dozens of amendments to its budget resolution, many of which could impact Tribal Nations. Earlier today, a coalition of 13 Tribal organizations, including USET SPF, transmitted a letter to Senate leadership to express concern and highlight opportunities for Indian Country as Congress considers budget reconciliation legislation. The letter urges that the bill exempt Indian Country from any negative policy change or reductions, and that it include Tribal priorities, such as the Tribal Tax and Investment Reform Act. With voting set to begin at 6:00 pm ET this evening, now is the time for Tribal Nations to weigh in with the Senate to exempt Indian Country from cuts and to advocate for our tax priorities. 🚨We strongly encourage USET SPF member Tribal Nations to reach out to your Senators and ask them to protect Indian Country from cuts in the budget resolution, as well as include the provisions of the Tribal Tax and Investment Reform Act. Learn more at https://ow.ly/fLaX50V3Sta and find your Senators' contact information at https://lnkd.in/eWg4gUdS.
