Big news -- the EDA reauthorization made it through both houses of Congress! One of the most exciting developments for universities is the formal recognition of university centers (Sec. 2217). 72 of these centers already exist, and under the reauthorized act they provide strategic planning support, capacity building, and support for research and technical assistance in innovation, entrepreneurship, and workforce development. For over 18 months, UEDA and the Virginia Tech Center for Economic and Community Engagement (CECE) conducted a study on the organization, operations, and implementation of economic development programs by EDA-designated University Centers (UCs). With support from EDA, UEDA aimed to expand its outreach to UCs and advance EDA’s objectives by facilitating knowledge transfer and sharing best practices among the UCs. This report summarizes the findings from a customer discovery process involving current UC grantees and other higher education stakeholders to identify key insights for improving the UC program in future funding cycles.
