This week, we're at AGU! 🌎 Washington D.C. is the city host for this year's American Geophysical Union (AGU) annual meeting. Having a poster on display is one of many ways that scientists engage and communicate with their community about current areas of research during these events. Dr. Page and her colleagues represented USNO in the poster hall in relation to their research: "Comparison of Modelled Atmospheric Angular Momentum Data with Geodetic Momentum." ⚓ 🌊 There's still time today and tomorrow to stop by the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography booth in the exhibitor hall (Booth 564!) and learn about career and intern opportunities within the meteorology and oceanography enterprise. If you haven't swung by, come over and say hello! #AGU2024 #NavalOceanography U.S. Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command

#ItStartsWithUs #METOCBirthday194 Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (CNMOC) traces its ancestry to the Depot of Charts and Instruments, a 19th-century repository for nautical charts and navigational equipment. In the 1840s, its superintendent, Lt Matthew Fontaine Maury, created and published a revolutionary series of wind and current charts. Here are a few from Lt. Maury courtesy of the United States Naval Observatory (USNO). Stay tuned for more throughout the week! As we look forward to a bright future, we must remember the heroes of our past whose shoulders we continue to stand on to provide the Fleet with access, the ability to maneuver, and deliver lethality when necessary to support the nation’s defense. #NavalOceanography #WarfightingWarfightersFoundation #AllAheadFlank

Some flurries on a Friday here in DC. ❄ While snow does not provide great seeing for an observation run, the 26" Great Equatorial in DC is still able to observe many nights throughout the year. USNO maintains the Washington Double Star Catalog (WDS), a catalog of the measured relative positions of over 155,000 binary stars. Wherever you are today, here's hoping for clear skies!

In the northern hemisphere, cooler temperatures and longer, dark nights are some of the seasonal cues to help us feel the change in time towards the winter solstice. Holidays also serve as a way to note the passage of time in the calendar year; Veterans Day is on November 11th, and is the first of two federal holidays this month. Many veterans have been a part of the U.S. Naval Observatory's history, contributing their expertise and professionalism in a variety of scientific and administrative roles critical to our operations. Veterans continue to make an impact everyday at USNO, and we are grateful to have them as colleagues. To all veterans, thank you for your sacrifice and service. Whether you take time to reflect, to relax, or spend time with family and friends this weekend, have a safe holiday! ___________________ Photo: Ways of timekeeping, old and new[er] - In the foreground sits the sundial commemorating the centennial of USNO's relocation to its current spot in Georgetown. This commemoration ceremony was held on May 15th, 1993. The late afternoon sun and the time ball on the roof of the main building are seen in the background.
