Our recently launched Nigeria eKYC report reveals a remarkable shift towards biometric-based verifications between October 2022 and October 2024. 👉 In 2022, biometric ID verifications made up 23% of all KYC checks conducted using Smile ID in Nigeria. 👉 By 2024, this figure surged to 46% - a 100% increase in just two years. What’s fueling this rapid growth? 👉 Traditional document verification focuses on authenticating official IDs, such as passports or national cards, but falls short of verifying whether the presenter is the legitimate owner. 👉 Biometric verification, on the other hand, uses unique traits like fingerprints or facial features to confirm both the document's authenticity and the presenter's identity. This enhanced security, combined with ease of use, is driving its adoption. Last week, Smile ID celebrated two remarkable milestones: ✅ The launch of our 2024 Nigeria eKYC Report, offering a comprehensive look at the trends shaping digital identity in Nigeria. ✅ Achieving 200 million identity verifications, showcasing the trust placed in us by businesses across Africa and beyond. Since our founding, our mission has been to make it easy for people to prove their identity online, regardless of the origin of their ID card or IP address. While it's fun to celebrate progress, what truly excites me is our future. Today we handle over 10 million identity checks of one kind or another every month across Africa. The infrastructure we have built enables merchants in Nigeria 🇳🇬 to protect their accounts from takeover, consumers in Zambia 🇿🇲 to get their first loan, businesses is Kenya 🇰🇪 to accept digital payments and consumers in South Africa 🇿🇦 to shop safely online. Many of our products are still in the early phases of adoption and we have a robust pipeline of additional countries and products that we plan to announce by 2025. My gratitude goes to our partners and our dedicated team for laying the foundation for this growth.
