With the new year comes good news! Congratulations to assistant professor Jin Yang who has been awarded two new research grants for the 2024-25 academic year. 🌟 The Academic Development Fund from the Cockrell School of Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin supports Yang’s efforts to modernize aerospace engineering education through innovative technologies and teaching strategies for the ASE 324L Aerospace Materials Lab course, where undergraduate students gain practical, hands-on experience in materials testing and analysis. Course advancements include integrating Digital Image Correlation – an advanced non-invasive experimental measurement technique – coupled with machine learning for data post-processing; and developing a tailored Large Language Model, called “AeroMatLabGPT” to support students’ individual learning styles. 🌟 The Semiconductor Research Corporation pilot seed grant supports Yang’s innovative research to enhance the understanding of interfacial fracture behavior in semiconductor packaging. By developing advanced experimental techniques like Digital Image Correlation and Digital Volume Correlation, Yang aims to characterize material properties in both 2D and 3D multilayered structures, which are crucial for the next generation of semiconductor technologies. These methods will provide high-fidelity data that will improve predictive modeling and the overall reliability of semiconductor packages.
