ECE PhD student Minjeong Kim won a best poster award during the 2024 Materials Research Society Fall Meeting which was held in Boston recently. Dugald C. Jackson Assistant Professor Dominic Gross, Thomas A. Lipo Assistant Professor Mahima Gupta, Thomas A. Lipo Assistant Professor Jinia Roy, and Keith and Jane Morgan Nosbusch Professor in Engineering Education Giri Venkataramanan's research discovery was selected as a semifinalist for the 2024 Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) Innovation Awards. The project, which developed smaller, less bulky power converter circuits for high performing HVDC systems, was one of six finalists among hundreds of disclosures submitted to WARF over the last year. ECE PhD students Asmita Pal, Elise Song and Zhewen Pan earned first place in the inaugural, campus-wide, N+1 Institute Reverse Pitch Competition sponsored by Google. The competition tasked students to focus on the area of sustainability for AI datacenters. The students, who are members of ECE Associate Professor Joshua San Miguel's research team, presented, 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 "𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥-𝘌𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩" 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘥. From undergraduate researcher to AR/VR innovator at Apple, ECE alum Junjue (Jay) Wang has had an extraordinary journey through tech. Now, he’s giving back to where it all began—endowing a Hilldale Undergraduate Research Fellowship for electrical and computer engineering students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Recently, the ECE Capstone Design Open House showcased the creativity and technical expertise of 15 senior design student teams as they presented self-imagined projects, from automated pet monitoring systems to puzzle-based alarm clocks. A celebration of collaboration and impact that drew alumni, faculty, and student peers, the event highlighted how ECE student innovators are addressing real-world challenges with ingenuity and learned skill. Congratulations to ECE grad Ahmed Hembel for winning an IEEE PELS PhD Thesis Talk award for his research, 𝟥𝘋-𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘌𝘹𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘗𝘊𝘉 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘍𝘭𝘢𝘵 𝘞𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘞𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘙𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘍𝘭𝘶𝘹 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴.
