Sometimes our best efforts to solve group, organizational, societal, and systemic challenges result in unaffected, worsening, or temporarily resolved problems. We usually rely on individual analysis and strategic thinking using mainstream, institutional knowledge sources. What if we were to access the wealth of other types of knowledges in the world around us: aesthetic, intuitive, emotional, spiritual, relational, energetic, communal, lived experiential, embodied, etc.? There are a number of practices, both old and new, that explore these other types of knowledge by creating awareness and using intention to act. At this conference, I was blown away by the brilliance of other folks in the design & innovation space, as we considered how to apply human-centered design to health and wellbeing.
It won’t be quiet for long…today is the first day of our Design Forge conference and we cannot wait to welcome all of our guests to campus! #ElonUniversity #ElonbyDesign #CenterforDesignThinking #DesignForge #DesignThinking #highereducation #highered

The School of Engineering at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) is currently inviting industry partners to submit capstone design project proposals for the upcoming spring semester. This initiative provides an excellent opportunity to collaborate with senior students. Each capstone design team, composed of 4-5 students, will approach the project holistically, leveraging their interdisciplinary skills to develop innovative solutions. The teams will work on these industry challenges throughout the semester, culminating in a formal presentation of their solutions by Spring 2025. The School of Engineering welcomes proposals from industry partners seeking fresh, creative solutions to engineering challenges. For full details, visit: https://lnkd.in/ezUF_w9y

The Iowa State University - College of Design and Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge are revolutionizing the future of affordable housing through a collaboration on the 3D Affordable Innovative Technologies (AIT) Housing Project. This initiative explores sustainable, cost-efficient housing solutions through additive manufacturing while training students to lead in this emerging field. As interest in digital fabrication grows, the hope is this practice may become standard when it comes to quickly rebuilding communities after natural disasters or bringing affordable housing to rural Iowa communities. Bridging the Gap: Unleashing Creativity in Industrial Design Students In the world of design education, fostering creativity during the crucial concept generation phase is paramount. A recent study by Tijana Vuletic; Alexander "Freddie" Holliman; and Avril Thomson from the University of Strathclyde explore the concept of divergence in conceptual design, specifically focusing on the differences between traditional design students and industry-based learners (ICED23 Proceedings). https://lnkd.in/guJY8faB Join the "Design is a Team Sport" movement at ICED25 Dallas. How can design education be tailored to cater to the needs of both traditional and industry-based students? Share your experiences with fostering creativity in design education. What are your thoughts on the importance of divergence in the design process? We all started somewhere, and for some of us, it was with a competition like the Annual University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) School of Engineering's High School Design Competition. It's for Grade 10 - 12 students, and the deadline to register isn't until November 1st, 2024, so there's still time to sign up. Oh... and did we mention that we're sponsoring? 👀 We think getting to hang out with a few of us for a day should be reward enough, but if that isn't enough to convince you to pull a team together, the winners get a $1000 in tuition credits from the School of Engineering and all participants get $500 in tuition credits. https://lnkd.in/gHS2ntJP #scoutenengineering #thinkingbeyond #princegeorgebc #civilengineering #structuralengineering

DLR Group continues to support STEM in school systems across the US in order to provide next-generation pathways into the A/E/C profession. Learning environments at Tointon Academy of Pre-Engineering support multiple configurations for inquiry-based learning exercises. Student groups of all sizes can come together to engage in engineering and science activities. This new school is named after long-time community advocate and district champion, Bob Tointon, who spent over 42 years building Colorado’s engineering, contracting, and manufacturing industries. In my cross-disciplinary undergraduate design studio at Victoria University this year, both building design and architectural engineering students were required to design tiny houses which are adaptive to various users' needs and offer smart home living for sustainability. The physical models produced were then used by electrical and electronic engineering students led by my colleague, Dr Rui Li to design, install and test multiple smart home functionalities (including energy harvesting, light and fan control based on human presence, temperature regulation and the display of environmental data). Students' design outcomes, including posters, videos and physical models with sensors and smart home functionalities are now exhibited at the 47th Australasian Universities Building Education Association (AUBEA2024) Conference at the VU CIty Tower (25-26 November 2024). #crossdisciplinarycollaboration #smarthomedesign #problembasedlearning #industryready #realworldscenario #VUBlockModel

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) recently introduced their Student Hall for Exploration and Development (SHED) which takes audience-centered design to new heights and covers more than 120,000 square feet of new construction. With a Crestron DM NVX backbone RIT's SHED provides flexible spaces that foster and stimulate creativity, collaboration, and discovery, which are uniquely designed serve every student and support their ambitions. Kinly knew the right fit to bring AV-over-IP to this impressive new building which was recognized as the "Top Education Project" in this year's DM NVX Technology Awards. We are pleased to annouce that the European Innovation Council is funding our project. We are a multidisciplinary team of young researchers from the University of Stuttgart developing innovative computational design methods and robotic fabrication processes to develop and construct a resource-saving building system for wood floor slabs. The tailor-made, high-performance plate structure is point-supported and provides architects and engineers with full design freedom, as it is only known from conventional reinforced concrete slabs. The new system is particularly interesting for buildings in city centres as the slabs can not only be adjusted to any shape of the site but can also be constructed 30% slimmer than alternative wood floor slabs. The project will be coordinated by the Institute for Computational Design and Construction (ICD) at the University of Stuttgart. The Institutes of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE), Institute for Acoustics and Building Physics (IABP), Institute for Construction Materials (IWB), the Materials Testings Institute (MPA), as well as the Chair for Computing in Architecture (ICD/CA) are all participating in the project. The project commenced in October 2024 with a duration of 3 years.
