About us

Vestaron Crop Protection is an ag technology company dedicated to providing our customers with the powerful solutions they need to meet the growing challenges of modern agriculture. Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Durham, NC (USA), we are producing a pipeline of powerful insecticides with new modes of action based on peptides modified from the venom of spiders and other venomous animals. Naturally soft on pollinators, beneficials, and local biodiversity, our innovations have earned recognition from the Crop Science Awards and the EPA’s Green Chemistry Challenge. In 2024, we became the first agriculture and food company inducted into the Global CleanTech 100 Hall of Fame. Our first product, SPEAR® LEP, is proven on more than 650,000+ acres and continues to gain market share in North America. Recently, SPEAR LEP has been approved for Emergency Use Authorization in several EU countries as a desperately needed solution to help farmers combat the destructive impact of tomato leafminer (Tuta absoluta) infestations which cause substantial yield and economic losses for farmers across the Mediterranean region of Europe. In 2024 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved our second novel-acting insecticide, BASIN®. Vestaron Crop Protection: Unconventional, by nature.

In a significant step towards sustainability and eco-friendly agriculture, Vestaron Crop Protection’s groundbreaking biopesticide, SPEAR® Insecticide, is setting a new standard in pest management. SPEAR® marks the emergence of a novel class of biopesticides that deliver efficacy on par with traditional synthetic insecticides but without their environmental drawbacks. What makes SPEAR® truly innovative is its foundation on naturally inspired peptides derived from the venom of the Blue Mountains funnel-web spider. Through a sustainable production process involving yeast fermentation of commodity sugars from corn, SPEAR® effectively targets harmful pests while being safe for non-target organisms, including bees and fish. With zero-day pre-harvest intervals and minimal toxicity to handlers and consumers, this biopesticide represents a leap forward in balancing agricultural productivity with environmental stewardship. SPEAR® addresses a critical challenge in modern agriculture: the need for potent pest control solutions that do not contribute to resistance development or environmental harm. By offering growers an effective, biodegradable alternative to synthetic options—one that decomposes into harmless amino acids—Vestaron’s biopesticide contributes to reducing the ecological footprint of farming and safeguarding biodiversity. This innovation is more than just a tool for farmers; it’s a model of how science can foster sustainable solutions that protect our crops and our planet. #Sustainability #GreenAgriculture #EcoInnovation #EnvironmentConservation #Biopesticides #FutureOfFarming

  • “We were among the first to test (SPEAR® LEP) in the country. We saw results that we had never seen before, both in terms of efficacy and durability. It has many advantages for us. The first is that the consumer can safely eat their tomato because (SPEAR) has zero MRLs, it does not affect beneficial insects, and it is also user-friendly.” Gregoris Smyrnis, agronomist and farmer, Filiatra, Peloponnese, Greece Learn more about the benefits of SPEAR LEP: https://lnkd.in/ghZnxU4P

  • “I started working with SPEAR® LEP as soon as it got the emergency authorization, and I can say the results have been spectacular. It is very important that producers here in Greece and Europe have access to new biological products as there are not many solutions and active ingredients that have an effective treatment." Nikos Nikolaidis, agronomist and farmer, Greece Learn more about the benefits of SPEAR LEP: https://lnkd.in/ghZnxU4P

  • At Vestaron, we recognize the urgent need to bring new biopesticides to European growers. Our peptide-based solutions offer effective pest control with low environmental impact, supporting a sustainable future in Europe’s fields and greenhouses. While awaiting full regulatory approval, we're assisting EU growers in securing emergency use authorizations where existing options fall short. Streamlining biocontrol approval processes would benefit Europe’s farmers significantly.

🌱 The EU’s Biocontrol Bottleneck: A Call for Urgent Regulatory Reform The Biocontrol Coalition is excited to share our perspective, featured in Euractiv! In this article, we highlight the critical need for a streamlined regulatory framework to improve EU farmers' access to biocontrol solutions. Nearly two decades after the REBECA project first flagged Europe’s limited market presence for biocontrol products, EU farmers still face long approval times, hindering their ability to adopt sustainable plant protection methods. 💡 Curious about how updated biocontrol regulations can support both environmental goals and farm productivity? ✒ Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eWMqEmPC ✒ Join the Biocontrol Coalition: https://lnkd.in/eP8Eajyg #BiocontrolCoalition #SustainableAgriculture #Biocontrol #Innovation #FutureOfFarming #EU

  • Backed by 300 million years of evolution, the spider plays a starring role in the development of our award-winning novel SPEAR® bioinsecticides. We have identified and modified peptides found in the venom of spiders and other venomous creatures to create highly targeted insecticides that are tough on pests and soft on pollinators, beneficials, farm workers, and the environment. • Thank you to the growers, advisors, and farm teams who have helped us get SPEAR® LEP into the IPM programs of growers across the globe. Our continued growth would not be possible without the progressive partners who have discovered the powerful and unique benefits of our spider-venom-derived bioinsecticide. Hard on pests, soft on pollinators and beneficials.
