A nonprofit organization working towards an educated and empowered global veterinary medical cannabis community

About us

Our mission is to create lasting solutions that ensure the safe use of cannabis in pets though education, advocacy and promoting product standards. We are a startup nonprofit comprised of dedicated professionals from around the world who share in the collective vision of 'an educated and empowered global veterinary medical cannabis community.' The current system is confusing and full of pitfalls...veterinarians need education and the confidence to discuss and utilize cannabis, pet parents need accurate information, and corporate manufacturers need clarity and guidance. The Veterinary Cannabis Society seeks to clarify the system to bring the benefits of cannabis to our pets in a legal, safe and efficacious way.

  • Well, well, well, wouldn't you know it: CBD is a treatment for THC toxicity. Ironic? Maybe. But it's also a testament to the complexity and power of cannabis. Here's the Frontiers study that led us to today's musing: https://lnkd.in/dEerJ75J And an excerpt: "Lethargy and ataxia noticeably improved and all additional clinical signs resolved within 45 min of treatment in five of six cases. No further follow-up measures for THC toxicosis were required in any case; one case required additional follow-up for presumably unrelated gastrointestinal distress. This is the first report of treatment of canine THC toxicosis by administration of CBD. The use of transmucosal CBD-infused dissolving sheets resulted in expedient resolution of clinical signs in a minimally invasive manner that is accessible to both clients and veterinary practitioners." Are you a practitioner who's used CBD to treat THC toxicity? Tell us about it!

Veterinary use of cannabis 🌿 for pets 🐶🐱 has been steadily growing as more practices seek innovative therapies. While there is still no fully regulated product, experts like Sandra Bruckner of AstraSana Animal Health AG who also serves on the board of the Veterinary Cannabis Society alongside me—are leading the way in understanding real-world applications. With over 900 patients under her care, Dr. Bruckner’s expertise is invaluable! It was a pleasure listening to her speak onstage 🎤, opening up the conversation to reduce uncertainty and highlight why plant-based solutions 🌱 can be just as effective for animals as they are for humans. As board members of VCS, we are committed to education, regional insights, and advocacy—helping pet owners and veterinarians make informed choices for their patients and beloved companions. 💚 #VeterinaryCannabis #PlantBasedMedicine #AnimalHealth #PetWellness #IntegrativeVeterinaryMedicine

  • A friend of the Society, Dr. Robert J. Silver, was recently interviewed by Cannabis Science and Technology. As usual, he drops some serious and up-to-date knowledge on cannabis science. And he's wearing his VCS t-shirt! Thanks for your continued support of the veterinary science community, Dr. Robert! https://lnkd.in/ddSJZCWg

  • NEW STUDY ALERT>>> Title: Healthy cats tolerate long-term daily feeding of Cannabidiol Summary: "Cannabidiol (CBD)-containing products are widely commercially available for companion animals, mirroring popularity in human use. Although data on the safety and efficacy of long-term oral supplementation are increasing in dogs, evidence remains lacking in cats. The purpose of these studies was to address gaps in the knowledge around the long-term suitability and tolerance of a tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-free CBD distillate in clinically healthy cats... Data presented here suggest that a THC-free, CBD distillate fed at a dose of 4 mg/kg BW was absorbed into plasma and well tolerated by healthy cats when supplemented over a period of 26 weeks." • VCS' founding Board Members and many of our current friends, sponsors, and staff are in Los Angeles and greater California. But even those VCSers who aren't in the (literal) line of fire feel dismayed by the devastation of the last week. Of course, we're particularly concerned about the domestic and wild critters who've come face-to-face with the flames. Our hearts go to their families and the tough decisions they've been forced to make. We support the Best Friends Animal Society in it's response to the LA fires. They're providing pantries, evacuation guides, and home-to-home fostering. They also partner with Wings of Rescue, whose volunteer pilots help evacuate animals. You can donate to the Best Friends LA fire response fund directly via their website: https://lnkd.in/dfnXNbgx.

  • This just in: The FDA has requested public input on cannabis in veterinary practice! Here is the exact wording of the request>>> "The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine has released a request for information (RFI) soliciting comments from the public, particularly veterinarians, related to the use of cannabis-derived products (CDP) in animals. The focus of this RFI is on cannabidiol (CBD) products and other products derived from hemp. The FDA is interested in general trends associated with these products, such as information about usage trends (e.g., product selection, indications, etc.), quality standards, benefits of use, potential drug interactions, adverse events and safety problems, and toxicological concerns. Information received through this RFI will enhance the FDA’s knowledge of potential safety signals associated with CDPs and improve the FDA’s understanding of veterinarians’ experiences related to the use of CDPs in their animal patients." The comment period ends on April 16, 2025. More information on how to format and submit your comments can be found on the FDA website: https://lnkd.in/enN7NkHU What will your comment say? We're preparing ours now!
