Viata co-founder Cecilia Aragon, PhD is building an interactive visualization to help residents understand the future of transportation in Washington State - stay tuned!
We're thinking of the future for a new project that we are excited to launch! By 2050, the population in Central Puget Sound is expected to grow by 1.5 million people to an estimated 5.8 million who will call this place home. With this, there are several major infrastructure projects either identified or in the early stages of development with planning efforts that are separate from one another, including: 🚄 Potential ultra-high-speed rail to connect British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon 🛫 A third commercial airport 🛣 I-5 preservation and mobility enhancements A holistic picture is needed for decision-makers to understand the tradeoffs and considerations for the future of Cascadia mobility to support the anticipated needs. Led by Cecilia Aragon, PhD, with Vishnupriya Napa Ravikumar, Andrea Figueroa from University of Washington Human Centered Design & Engineering and Ryan Avery, the team will incorporate regional planning data into a visualization platform, evaluate travel times and costs for individual households, and evaluate passenger air travel demand, cost, and availability. Looking forward to showing off this work next spring! https://lnkd.in/gWpW6RRK #MobilityInnovation #FutureOfTransportion #PugetSound #datavisualization

Maps are designed to show distance - but people think about travel in terms of time. The maps below show 7 homes for sale in the Seattle area. How long would it take someone working in Eastlake to commute to each of these options? A normal map (left) does a great job of representing geographic reality, but it can be challenging for a user to understand travel times to multiple potential destinations at once. In an era of constantly changing traffic conditions and multimodal transportation options, we need a new way to look at travel. Traffigram (right) lets you see the travel time to all of these locations at a glance, and compare options effortlessly. The closer it is on the map, the sooner you can get there - simple as that.
