Ending extreme poverty in rural Africa. Building a sustainable future for all.
About us
We believe it is possible to end extreme poverty. But climate change, conflict, and other shocks are threatening the progress that has been made. Backed by rigorous evidence, we have a solution that lifts families in rural Africa out of extreme poverty, improves their well-being and resiliency, and ensures a brighter future for generations to come. Partnering with governments, nonprofits, United Nations agencies, conservation organizations, and private sector companies, Village Enterprise equips women, refugees, and youth living in extreme poverty with the resources and skills to become first-time business owners and start climate-smart businesses and savings groups. For over 30 years, we have worked in rural African communities where most people live on $2.15 a day or less. Over 97% of our team is African, and more than 83% of our entrepreneurs are female. To date, we have impacted the lives of more than 2 million people in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo-Brazzaville, Tanzania, and Mozambique. To learn more about our work to eradicate extreme poverty and how our model empowers women, youth, and refugees, cultivates resilience against climate change, and protects the environment and endangered species, visit our website.

Entrepreneurship transforms lives 💚 With reliable incomes and savings from their businesses, our entrepreneurs have the resources to break generational cycles of extreme poverty and build sustainable livelihoods. They're able to afford more nutritious meals for their families, send their children to school, access important healthcare when needed, and better navigate the unpredictable effects of climate change. One business has the power to transform life for an entire family. And, to date, the businesses our entrepreneurs have started have impacted more than two million lives across rural Africa. We think that's pretty amazing.

Village Enterprise is proud to have partnered with the Government Of Makueni County to launch their brand new poverty alleviation policy! This groundbreaking policy was officially unveiled earlier this week by Deputy Governor H.E. Lucy Mulili and Village Enterprise's Chief Government Relations Officer Taddeo Muriuki. Speaking at the event, the Deputy Governor pledged county funding for a pilot implementation—a signal of the county government’s readiness to not only adopt, but also scale up the poverty graduation model for sustainable poverty alleviation. With support from Village Enterprise, this policy establishes a comprehensive framework for implementing the poverty graduation model in Kenya's Makueni County. This proven approach uses entrepreneurship to empower families to overcome extreme poverty and enhance their resilience to climate change. Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this initiative represents a pivotal step in Makueni County’s mission to support vulnerable communities, foster sustainable livelihoods, and address climate-related challenges. This policy sets the stage for accelerating poverty alleviation throughout the county, and we're honored to contribute to building a brighter, more sustainable future for all!

"Aligning entrepreneurship and conservation is fundamental to the success of both people and planet." 🌍 In Earth.Org, our CEO Dianne Calvi shares how Village Enterprise's poverty graduation model is furthering conservation efforts and reducing extreme poverty in Uganda's Kibale National Park. By partnering with Ngogo Chimpanzee Project, and with funding from the Arcus Foundation, our efforts in Kibale National Park are protecting one of the largest remaining populations of East African chimpanzees while equipping local communities to break the cycle of extreme poverty through entrepreneurship. JABEIC brought together a diverse group of stakeholders—from policymakers to investors—all united by a passion for agribusiness, the blue economy, and sustainable development. At the event: John Ochieng, our Project Manager for Policy and Advocacy, delivered a keynote address on the importance of empowering youth and women in agriculture and the blue economy. Esther Kisavi, our County Liaison Coordinator in Taita Taveta, highlighted Village Enterprise's impact in creating sustainable pathways for first-time entrepreneurs transitioning out of extreme poverty.
