Village Enterprise is proud to have partnered with the Government Of Makueni County to launch their brand new poverty alleviation policy! This groundbreaking policy was officially unveiled earlier this week by Deputy Governor H.E. Lucy Mulili and Village Enterprise's Chief Government Relations Officer Taddeo Muriuki. Speaking at the event, the Deputy Governor pledged county funding for a pilot implementation—a signal of the county government’s readiness to not only adopt, but also scale up the poverty graduation model for sustainable poverty alleviation. With support from Village Enterprise, this policy establishes a comprehensive framework for implementing the poverty graduation model in Kenya's Makueni County. This proven approach uses entrepreneurship to empower families to overcome extreme poverty and enhance their resilience to climate change. Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this initiative represents a pivotal step in Makueni County’s mission to support vulnerable communities, foster sustainable livelihoods, and address climate-related challenges. This policy sets the stage for accelerating poverty alleviation throughout the county, and we're honored to contribute to building a brighter, more sustainable future for all!

Village Enterprise SOS Children's Villages International Village Capital The enduring hunger pangs of a deprived community in Kenya were once a pervasive reality, as they were in countless other villages. On October 17, the international community gathers to observe the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, first celebrated in 1987, Paris. Today, the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals Report for 2024 reveals that we are still far from achieving Goal 1: No Poverty by 2030. After the bruising impact the global COVID-19 pandemic had on global efforts to eradicate poverty, we are only just recovering; if nothing changes, there will still be 590 million people in extreme poverty by 2030. C.P. Group, as a part of the United Nations Global Compact and a founding member of the UN Global Compact Network Thailand, is committed to driving achievement of the UN SDGs - especially the eradication of poverty. The Group has worked with local and regional partners to drive initiatives across the world to address some of the most severe cases of poverty and food insecurity. The UN Report states that climate-change exacerbated extreme weather events continue to impact billions of people across the globe, worsening poverty. In Thailand, we are faced with devastating floods across 33 northern provinces that have caused over 30 billion baht in estimated damages. Houses, farms, and livelihoods have been destroyed, leading to displacement and poverty. C.P. Group is working to mitigate these disasters by working with local communities affected by floods, bringing in support in the form of food, water, manpower, and more. Furthermore, with our roles in the food, telecoms, construction, and many other sectors, we are able to lend our hand in many ways to support those affected. True Corporation has worked to stabilize connectivity in affected areas, and provided a temporary moratorium on payments to ensure those impacted are still able to communicate and access information. CP Foods, CPRAM, CPCRT, CP AXTRA and many more of our businesses are providing meals and clean water to the victims, creating a critical lifeline for those who have lost everything in the floods. Furthermore, staff and volunteers are in the field to assist in delivering these necessities and providing much needed assistance wherever it is required. The Group and all our businesses will continue to work with all our partners to mitigate the impact of this disaster, and pursue our goal of a better tomorrow, without poverty and hunger. #cpgroup

17 October: International Day for the Eradication of Poverty The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, observed on 17 October, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about the complex and multifaceted issue of poverty. It emphasises the collective responsibility of nations, organisations, and individuals to address the structural causes of poverty, promote social inclusion, and create sustainable solutions for those who live in extreme poverty. Poverty is more than just a lack of income. It encompasses a range of deprivations that prevent people from accessing basic necessities such as adequate food, clean water, education, healthcare, and housing. Poverty also manifests in limited opportunities for social participation, marginalisation from political processes, and a lack of access to productive resources. The United Nations defines extreme poverty as living on less than $1.90 a day, but poverty is also a relative condition, varying across different societies and regions. The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is a critical moment for reflecting on the global efforts required to combat poverty. It emphasises the need for multidimensional approaches that address not only income poverty but also its social, economic, and political dimensions. Sustainable development, inclusive growth, and social protection systems are essential components of poverty eradication efforts.

Poverty problem Please read my statement and listen to what the chair lady is talking about and think about my big question UP TO WHEN WE CONTINUE IN THIS PROBLEM OF POVERTY? Born and raised and ending up working in the war-torn countries helped me to educate myself and open my eyes to see the exact problem facing us. The issue of poverty is complex and multifaceted, and unfortunately, it persists in many parts of the world despite various efforts to alleviate it. The timeline for when we can completely eradicate poverty is uncertain and depends on various factors such as political will, economic policies, social programs, and global cooperation. Factors such as conflicts, war, natural disasters, political instability, corruption, lack of access to education and healthcare, and economic inequalities can all contribute to the persistence of poverty in many regions. Addressing these root causes and implementing sustainable solutions will be key in making progress towards poverty eradication. Individual experiences, like yours working in war-torn countries, can provide valuable insights into the challenges faced by communities living in poverty. By continuing to educate yourself and raise awareness about these issues, you can contribute to the efforts to combat poverty and create positive change. It is important for individuals, communities, governments, and international organizations to work together towards sustainable development goals, promote social justice, and ensure equal opportunities for all. While the journey to eradicate poverty may be long and challenging, collective action and a commitment to addressing the underlying causes of poverty can lead to significant progress over time.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty highlights the global issue of poverty and promotes awareness and action towards its eradication. This is primarily based on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1: No Poverty, which aims to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. For 17 years, Sawa World has been at the forefront of poverty eradication, providing youth with access to locally created easy-to-start income-generating skills from which they can start microbusinesses. Our approach involves identifying and partnering with youth entrepreneurs with easy-to-start locally-created income-generating skills. These entrepreneurs are supported to train other youth through skills training workshops, training videos shared online and offline, and learning posters which are visual guides for each skill. The youth can use this knowledge and skills to start micro-businesses that earn them income. By skilling these youth, we create a ripple effect of economic activity that improves their overall well-being and that of their families and communities. What makes our approach unique is our belief that every youth has the potential to contribute to a more equitable world, a Sawa World, starting with themselves. Through the generous support of partner organizations and donors over the years, Sawa World has directly trained over 85,000 youth, and over 18,000 of these have started micro-businesses. As we build a strategic path forward, we aim at training and scaling up access to our local income skills for youth in Uganda and globally. #SawaWorld #SolutionsFromWithin #NoPoverty #PovertyEradication

President Tinubu Backs Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty at G20 Summit President Bola Tinubu has hailed the creation of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, championed by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil. Tinubu described the alliance as pivotal in the global fight against hunger and poverty. He made this statement on Monday at the 19th G20 Leaders Summit opening session in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He lauded the initiative and described it as the right step to address one of the world’s most significant challenges. “This bold and visionary step underscores Brazil’s leadership in addressing one of the most urgent and persistent challenges facing our world today. “The creation of this Alliance marks a significant milestone in our global efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty, and it also sends a powerful message of solidarity to vulnerable populations around the globe. “By fostering collaboration between governments, international organisations, and civil society, this initiative offers a comprehensive approach not only to addressing immediate needs but also tackling the structural causes of hunger and poverty,” he said. President Tinubu compared the global initiative to one of the eight priority areas he outlined at his inauguration 18 months ago, expressing Nigeria’s eagerness to adopt international best practices to advance its economic development. According to President Tinubu, Nigeria’s endorsement of the declaration of commitment to join the Global Alliance is a significant step in its efforts to address hunger and poverty, by leveraging international cooperation and resources to bolster domestic strategies. He added that by supporting the initiative, Nigeria also demonstrates a solid commitment to realising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1, which focuses on eradicating poverty, and SDG 2, which aims to achieve zero hunger. We're excited to announce our renewed partnership with the County Government of West Pokot, led by Governor Simon Kachapin. Being the first county in Kenya to ratify a poverty graduation policy, this collaboration marks a significant development in our concerted effort to alleviate extreme poverty. Breaking the Chains of Poverty: A Call for Synergized Action You cannot fight poverty effectively without first understanding its roots, origins, and causes. Poverty stems from deeply ingrained systems of exploitation and mismanagement. To eradicate poverty, we must dismantle these systems and replace them with solutions that promote sustainable development and empowerment. At Instifodh, we emphasize a synergy-based approach to combating poverty. This involves identifying the root causes of poverty in families, communities, and institutions, and empowering people with the knowledge and tools to close these gaps. The truth is, poverty is not the real problem—the problem lies in the systems that claim to fight it. These systems often perpetuate poverty instead of solving it. Around the world, the most successful communities did not overcome poverty through wealth alone but through knowledge, collaboration, and strategic action. Let’s redefine how we fight poverty—by empowering communities to recognize the roots of poverty and develop sustainable solutions. For more insights and actionable strategies, contact Instifodh. Together, we can build systems that work to eradicate poverty everywhere. Instifod.africa@gmail.com Social.peace@ao.com

“ International Day for the Eradication of Poverty: A Call to Action for a Fairer World ” Every year on October 17th, the world observes the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the ongoing struggle against poverty and to call for global solidarity in the fight to eliminate it. Established by the United Nations in 1992, this day serves as a reminder that poverty is not only an economic issue but also a social, political, and moral challenge that impacts millions of people worldwide. 2024 Theme: "Decent Work for All – End Poverty" The theme for this year focuses on decent work as a critical path to ending poverty. Access to quality jobs that provide fair wages, safe working conditions, and social protections is one of the most effective ways to lift individuals and communities out of poverty. The global economy must prioritize inclusive growth, ensuring that the benefits of economic progress reach everyone, especially the marginalized and vulnerable populations. Global Poverty: The Facts and the Challenges Despite progress in reducing extreme poverty over the past few decades, over 700 million people still live on less than $2.15 a day, according to the World Bank. These figures are alarming, particularly in light of recent global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and geopolitical conflicts, which have disproportionately affected the poorest populations. In fact, the pandemic alone has pushed an estimated 97 million people into poverty, reversing years of progress.
