PROteolysis-Targeting Chimeras (PROTACs) are unlocking the potential to treat the undruggable, and on the 12th December, Dr. William Farnaby from the Centre for Targeted Protein Degradation, University of Dundee, will share insights into the design, mechanism, lead optimization and efficacy of PROTACs therapeutics. Grapes contain compounds called antioxidants, which may help to protect against cardiovascular disease. However, individual varieties of grapes contain different types and quantities of these special compounds. Traditional analytical methods have focused on measuring the sum of antioxidants in a sample; however mass spectrometry allows the identification and quantification of each individual antioxidant, helping researchers develop products that have the highest potential health benefits. Meet Scarlet Ferrinho, a research scientist undertaking a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Waters Corporation and the University of Surrey. The KTP is part-funded by Innovate UK and aims to connect ambitious businesses and organisations with academic experts to turn innovative ideas into reality. Scarlet´s work is focused on single cell analysis using the new Xevo MRT mass spectrometer to probe into population heterogeneity at the cellular level, and she has demonstrated how the technology enables single cell lipidomic analysis. In this article published in International Pharmaceutical Industry Journal, Darcy Shave, Principal Product Manager, discusses the benefits of automating liquid chromatography workflows in pharmaceutical labs. Automation enhances efficiency by reducing human error, saving time, increasing productivity, and allowing labs to handle repetitive tasks like sample preparation and data analysis more effectively. However, despite its advantages, automation is not yet widely adopted in the pharmaceutical industry. Darcy emphasizes how integrating automation can improve consistency, traceability, and overall workflow efficiency, and looks towards a future where humans work alongside intelligent instrumentation.
