The Mission for Natural Heritage, represented by MedCities / MedCités, attended the Union for the Mediterranean’s MedTalks event to share insights and actionable recommendations for ecosystem restoration across the Mediterranean, advancing Target 2 of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and the EU Nature Restoration Law (NRL). Key Recommendations for Effective Restoration: ✅ Prioritise passive restoration by addressing the root causes of ecosystem degradation and reducing pressures in National Restoration Plans. ✅ Emphasise the source-to-sea approach, promoting interconnected restoration efforts across terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecosystems. ✅ Acknowledge the key role of cities and sub-national authorities in restoration - ensuring they are central to the implementation process. UNEP/MAP - SPA/RAC shared the transferability and uptake of conservation principles and regulations in the Mediterranean, focusing on the Post-2020 strategic action programme for the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable management of natural resources in the region. 🌊 Featured Thematic Projects of the Mission for Natural Heritage: 🔹 MPA4CHANGE: A thematic project focused on enhancing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to address climate emergencies and strengthen ecosystem resilience. The project presented its toolkits for MPAs adaptation action plans and the #MedAlliance campaign 🔹 Interreg Euro-MED WE GO COOP: A project creating a Community of Practice for Wetland Contracts to safeguard critical wetland ecosystems across the Euro-Mediterranean region. The project presented its virtual collaborative platform, which allows to define a strategy to activate a collaborative governance process. WE GO COOP ✨ The Interreg Euro-MED WE GO COOP project promotes the implementation of Wetland Contracts, a multilevel collaborative governance tool tested in various EU-funded projects, fostering coordination between previously involved organizations and new key stakeholders. The project aims to establish a Community of Practice (CoP) among actors engaged in Environmental Contracts at the Mediterranean level, capitalizing on the outcomes of previous projects, sharing challenges and solutions. Meanwhile, the project will exchange experiences, methodologies, and strategies and transfer the tool to new contexts in the Euro-Mediterranean region and the Middle Eastern and Southern Mediterranean region. Transnational cooperation becomes the tool through which WE GO COOP forms the CoP uniting diverse perspectives facing similar challenges, enabling the project to meet the needs of wetlands on a large scale, ensuring the transferability of its results. On October 1st and 2nd, FAMP will host the event 𝐆𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠. We will start working on the establishment of the Community of Practice (CoP) of Mediterranean Wetland Contracts. 🌾 WE GO COOP EXHIBITION ON WETLAND COLLABORATIVE GOVERNANCE One of the first outputs of #wegocoop is an exhibition that aims to foster awareness on collaborative wetland governance. Each partner produced one or more posters on case studies in their territory or EU funded projects about experiences of governance processes in wetland, river and coastal environment. Each partner set up the exhibition in visitable locations and the project is creating a network of itinerant exhibitions in the Mediterranean.
