European project to improving drought monitoring, prevention and adaptability in Euro-Mediterranean ecosystems
About us
Germ of Life project, co-financed by the Interreg Euro-MED Programme, develops an innovative system of digital technologies to improve preventive management of drought risks. The innovative initiative of 10 entities from 6 countries (Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Portugal, France, Spain) in order to create a digital technological platform with monitoring indicators and concerted data that allows addressing mitigation and adaptation to drought for the balance of ecosystems in the Euro-Mediterranean area. Germ of Life system is based on solutions developed and adapted together using commonly defined data. With information sources and monitoring indices that will support the prediction of drought risk for territorial monitoring, establishing alerts of drought conditions. The cross-border dimension of the project allows the institutions, entities and companies involved to collaborate in the assessment of the vulnerability of the territories based on a shared approach. Contributing together to the generation of innovations and their pilot tests with nature-based solutions and technological solutions aimed at the challenges of mitigating drought risk. The partnership is led by the University of Patras (Greece). The other partners are: The Region of Western Greece, Foundation Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC), Lamoro Development Agency, Ubitel Ingeniería, Atos, The Development and Infrastructure Company of Alqueva (EDIA), Junta de Andalucía, Dotsoft, Infotrend. The Mediterranean region is considered one of the geographical areas in the world with the greatest exposure to the environmental and socioeconomic consequences of droughts due to climate change. These are the three dimensions that it faces with a new perspective:1) The severity and probability of a drought situation occurring. 2) The exposed territories, ecosystems and population. 3) Vulnerability and the ability to adopt solutions with technologies and natural means.

The UNCCD Communities of Learning and Practice on Drought Management (CLP) is a global platform designed to foster collaboration, share knowledge, and inspire innovation in drought management. This is a space for professionals in drought management and associated fields to connect, interact and work towards same objectives. 💦 🌿 The CLP provides access to digital communities which allow: discussions, sharing of community contents, communications, and other functions. Its official launch presentation took place on December 11 at the COP16 organized by the United Nations in Riyadh. 🌏 A total of six CLPs have been established and currently operational: a Global CLP and five regional communities (Africa CLP, Asia CLP, Latin America and the Caribbean CLP, Northern Mediterranean CLP, and Central and Eastern Europe CLP). The CLPs are thus a mechanism to promote intra- but also inter-regional knowledge sharing that help turning local experience and knowhow into global insights. The United Nations UNCCD, in collaboration with the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) and partners (CIMA Research Foundation, United Nations University - Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), has launched the World Drought Atlas, highlighting the systemic risks of drought across critical sectors like energy, agriculture, river transport and trade, using maps, infographics and case studies to showcase its cascading impacts on inequality, conflict and public health. 🌍 🏛️ 🦚 💦 This Atlas has been presented at the UNCCD COP16 in Riyadh. Aims to illustrate all dimensions of drought and frame challenges and responses to equip policymakers to take steps and actions towards drought resilience.
