  • Okay, fine. Recruiting is sales* *But not in the traditional sense. Last week, I said I firmly believe recruiting is sales. And as a lot of people (rightly) point out, there’s nuance to that statement. You’re not supposed to be overselling, telling candidates what they want to hear, or misrepresenting what the actually day-to-day is like. That’s just a recipe for high attrition and poor matches. The best way to "sell" is to: 1. understand deeply the needs and wants of a candidate 2. explain how your company fits / or doesn't fit Some questions I like for this: 1. What are you looking for in your next opportunity? 2. What concerns do you have for the next opportunity? 3. Describe a work culture where you felt most productive in. What made it so? 4. What behaviors have frustrated you about work cultures that you’ve worked in? How would you change them? 5. What tasks give you energy / get you in flow? Make sure to follow up and ask “why”, “tell me more”, etc. - If you find out it’s not a great fit, you can explain why. - If you find out they’re a great match, you can sell that, genuinely. Too many hiring managers skip this step, and go full generic mission statement. It never works. At least, if it does, it’s by accident.

Hiring managers, if your response-rate is terrifyingly low for your take-home challenge, here’s why. It’s probably not respecting the candidate’s time. Amanda from Riley does the right thing with her interview process - paid take-home projects. If you do a take-home project for your tech interviews, this is the easiest way to increase your response rate. A candidate’s time is valuable, and asking them to do a 4-hour project without any compensation is setting you and your interview pipeline up for massive failure. Even something as simple as an Amazon gift card goes a long way!

Candidates spend way too much time worrying about the hard parts of interviewing, and completely skip over the easy ways to stand out. Gabriel at TensorZero lays it all out right here. You can grind leetcode all you want, but it’s a much more interesting conversation if you can talk about the company’s software, what it’s like to use it, and how you’d improve it. It’s as easy as stuff like: - Reading the docs - Understanding the use case - Trying the quick start or basic “hello world” (Founders and HMs, this is why you should make your product accessible if it’s possible - makes for much better interview content)
