We couldn't have said it better ourselves, "Modernizing and expanding our transmission system is essential".
Exciting times in the world of transmission planning and development! I recently had the opportunity to attend an expert panel discussion hosted by the Women's Energy Network Boston, and I came away with a renewed appreciation for the critical role transmission plays in supporting the clean energy transition and the sense of urgency . A few key takeaways: 🔔Projections of a 25-85% increase in electricity demand by 2050, which is a significant and "astounding" increase that will require substantial investment in the transmission system to accommodate (and another post to dive deeper into the causes for the increase). 🔔 FERC's Order 1920 is a game-changer. As Karin Herzfeld explained, this new rule requires transmission providers to take a much more forward-looking, 20-year approach to planning. By considering a broader set of benefits and engaging more with states, this should lead to more strategic, valuable transmission investments. Innovative technologies are on the horizon. Frances B. from Veir discussed how advanced conductors and superconducting lines can dramatically increase the capacity of existing transmission corridor. 🔔 And Sally Librera of National Grid brought her transportation background to the table and highlighted how grid optimization tools like dynamic line rating are being deployed to squeeze more out of the current infrastructure. 🔔 Collaboration is key. As Christina Hayes enthusiastically emphasized, regional and interregional planning will be crucial to building the high-capacity transmission needed to connect renewable resources across the country. Aligning these efforts with state/local policies and tapping into new funding mechanisms will be critical. There's a lot of complexity in this space, but the overarching message is clear - modernizing and expanding our transmission system is essential to achieving our clean energy goals. Kudos to the WEN Boston team fir Tiffany Hawco, CHMM for convening this insightful discussion and for GE Vernova's Megan Higgins for graciously hosting in your vibrant new space. I'm excited to see what the future holds for this critical piece of our energy infrastructure.
