About us
California's Golden Dream is thriving in one of its newest cities. Incorporated in 1987, West Sacramento is a city designed and ready for business in the 80's. Yet its history dates back more than 100 years. Like its cross-river neighbor, West Sacramento was first settled during the Gold Rush era. The early settlers soon learned that the real gold in the area was the incredibly rich delta soil deposited over the centuries by the Sacramento and the American Rivers. By the turn of the century the central valley of California was recognized as one of the premiere agricultural areas of the world. As Sacramento grew into a major city, West Sacramento, which was separated by the Sacramento River and a county line, retained its small town character and industrial base. Today, West Sacramento is at the crossroads of California. Featuring its own deepwater port, two interstate highways, major North/South and East/West rail lines and a commercial airport nearby, West Sacramento is well connected to the Pacific Rim and the rest of the nation. And just a literal stone's throw away is downtown Sacramento, the seat of the government for the 6th largest economy in the world. Being a part of the Greater Sacramento community, we're on everyone's list as one of the fastest growing and most livable areas in the country. Yet West Sacramento offers something that can no longer be found in many of California's cities - affordable land and housing. The average home cost is less than half of what a comparable home costs in metropolitan areas as little as 80 miles away. There is a small town atmosphere in West Sacramento, with traditional values and a healthy respect for business and industry. Come to West Sacramento. Meet the people. See the land. You'll agree the climate is right for you!

The City of West Sacramento and the West Sacramento Fire Department (WSFD) celebrated the restoration of Engine 45 with a traditional Push In ceremony on Thursday, December 5. Brought back into rotation through voter passage of tax Measure O, firefighters, police, community supporters and members of the City Council pushed the engine into the apparatus Bay at Station 45. Engine 45 has been out of service since 2012 due to lack of funding for appropriate staffing and equipment, despite increased demand for fire services. Since 2008, there has been a 70 percent increase in the number of calls overall including medical emergencies, and a 130 percent increase in calls strictly for fires. With Measure O funding, WSFD is now able to restore Engine 45 and create nine additional firefighter positions, improving citywide fire response times. “We are thrilled to have funding for resources to properly staff Engine 45,” said WSFD Chief Steve Binns. “Another engine and increased staffing will allow our department to properly service our city’s expanding needs. A total of five engines and one ladder truck will now service West Sacramento’s growing population.” Within minutes of the Push In ceremony, Engine 45 roared off on its first call! Measure O, placed on the ballot by the City Council and approved by voters in November, will provide funding support for essential city services such as public safety, road rehabilitation projects, parks and trail maintenance and homelessness response.

We are saddened to share the news that longtime West Sacramento City Manager Joe Goeden passed away over the weekend at his West Sacramento home. He was 75. Mr. Goeden served as City Manager from 1989 to 2002 and is credited with guiding the City through the early stages of growth following incorporation. Mr. Goeden played a key role in many city milestones, including development of the Civic Center complex on West Capitol Avenue, and construction of City Hall and the Community Center. He also helped secure the relocation of the River Cats to West Sacramento and construction of Raley Field. Goeden is remembered as a soft spoken, attentive, and intelligent leader who constantly challenged staff to push towards making West Sacramento a regional leader in good governance and the community's quality of life. Private services are pending.

Tower Bridge Gateway, which runs between Jefferson Blvd, past Sutter Health Park to the Tower Bridge is now officially Calbaldon Parkway. The City celebrated the renaming with a street sign unveiling to honor former Mayor Christopher Cabaldon's leadership, which spans 22 years. Mr. Cabaldon was first elected to the West Sacramento City Council in 1996 and served as Mayor from 1998-2020. Congratulations!

This happened! Built mostly during the pandemic, our new City Hall Annex is now home to the City of West Sacramento's Economic Development and Housing Department. We celebrated with an open house on Tuesday, 10/29/24! Great job by our Capital Projects team on completing this beautiful office space....which is located just down the street from City Hall.
