  • I'm Kate, the founder of What If Education?® I have been a teacher since I was 4 years old… teddies and sisters make great pupils. 😁 I love teaching - I joke (but mean it) that it is my only talent – but my skills, strengths and beliefs about what a great education looks like just don't align with how the current school experience looks and feels for educators and children. I value education that prioritises healthy development, active learning, relationships and connection, creativity, play and intrinsic motivation. I don’t value standardised tests, using scores to measure learning and progress, extrinsic rewards and punishments, sedentary learning, uniformity and solely adult-led teaching and learning experiences. I hated working within the fear-based culture that has got hold of education and I knew that there were solutions out there that could make the education experience happier, less stressful and more relevant for everyone. So, with a heavy heart but an equally determined spirit I left the classroom and began the journey of looking for answers. This led to: Founding What If Education?® which started life as a provocation, that looks at learning differently and gets curious about how we could make things better through the power of what if? 18 months studying for a coaching diploma. Qualifying as a coach meant that What If Education?® became home to my coaching business. Now I partner with school leaders and teachers and through our coaching conversations we discover what is within their control to make their job happier, less stressful and more relevant for them and their school communities. Joining the team at NoTosh™ as a Senior Consultant. I jumped at the chance to work with this inspirational education consultancy. Here the vision for every learner to experience confidence, creativity and endless curiosity; and the mission to help school leaders to accelerate positive change by thinking and doing things differently are lived and breathed by the whole team...now including me! Last but not least, there is a little/vast project that has to stay 🤫for now, but I can't wait to share... I awe & wonder what it will be? 💫 #whatifeducation

  • Education is an amazing thing – it's the capacity to teach and learn that defines us. Education can make life wonderful, not just for its outcomes but for the experience itself. Yet, for many, education is stressful, unhappy, and irrelevant. Learning has lost its way. For so many, it's become something to endure rather than enjoy, suffocated by politics and a relentless drive for quantitative outcomes. A numerical score is seen as the pinnacle – but who are these numbers really for, what do they really tell us, and what do they cost? Well... rarely for the children, wildly misleading and costing healthy childhoods and a thriving workforce... they are very expensive indeed. What If Education?® looks at learning differently and advocates for three things that can transform an education space: - Moving to a trust-based culture so that an entire school community can thrive. - Providing an education that supports healthy child development and values input and process. - Creating an education that provides young people with the skills and resources they need for the world they live in. Totally Possible: Forming trust-based cultures with a coach approach – the answers are within. Totally Doable: Providing a healthy education by making play possible in primary schools. Totally Transformational: Creating a fun-in-the-moment, future-ready education by valuing creativity, enquiry, exploration, and play as essential components of effective teaching and learning. But what about the scores? We can’t change the system! I agree, we can’t BUT we can change how we react to it. With these three things thriving, we can relax – the numbers will take care of themselves. What If Education?® has always been and continues to be about refusing to accept that it is ok for the education space to be an unhappy place for so many educators, children, and families! Because... what if it wasn’t?
