What is Wherobots? It's a question we get asked sometimes, so we wanted to make it super easy to understand. That's why we created this handy explainer video. Check it out here 👇

Filtering and counting 1TB of geospatial data is straightforward — you shouldn’t have to pay for it. A simple Python script, GeoPandas, DuckDB can handle it efficiently. Save your money. The real challenge in geospatial data lies in connecting spatial information to the physical world using coordinates to derive insights—such as identifying neighbors or understanding the surrounding environment, tasks that are integral to daily life. This challenge, known as the spatial join problem, is far from trivial. Even self-joining a 1GB geospatial dataset is difficult, and scaling to 1TB is nearly impossible without meticulously designed systems. At its core, Wherobots tackles this joining problem. By leveraging cloud-native formats like Apache Iceberg (of course Parquet and GeoParquet) which decouple storage and compute, we provide an open storage layer free from vendor lock-in. This openness allows users to handle straightforward tasks like filtering and counting with their preferred tools while relying on WherobotsDB, an advanced database engine built on Apache Sedona, to tackle the challenging yet common geospatial problems. With us, you’re in good hands. #geospatial #bigdata

How many people really need to wrangle 1TB of data on a daily basis? I feel like the word-count / hype-calories expended on "cloud native geospatial" dramatically exceeds the number of organizations that can get value from the architecture. Which is perhaps why Esri just keeps beavering along with incremental improvements to their desktop oriented, cloud immigrant architecture.
