How can we build powerful evidence to end violence against women? We encourage our fellow development practitioners to engage with the Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) Forum, an independent non-governmental organization focused on knowledge management around all aspects of violence against women and children. Throughout the #16Days campaign, they'll be sharing powerful evidence that can help foster long-term scalable solutions for structural change. https://lnkd.in/gbfZDt5V

Building partnerships and creating referral pathways with key stakeholders is key to improving health outcomes. Under USAID IHP, WI-HER worked with stakeholders at every level to improve Nigeria's response to gender-based violence. Here, a participant in one of our IHP sessions shared what she learned about gender, social inclusion, and gender-based violence: https://ow.ly/9nsw50Ufwbs #Partnershps #EndGBV #16DaysOfActivism

"Gender-based violence (GBV) impacts millions worldwide, disproportionately affecting women and girls. Raising awareness is essential, but we also need targeted programs to drive behavior change at the root causes. Engaging men and boys in conversations about respectful relationships and promoting inclusive, peaceful masculinities can shift harmful norms. Let's work together to build communities where everyone is safe to speak out against violence! By amplifying efforts like the recommendations for the United States Institute of Peace's (USIP) work with displaced communities, we go beyond raising awareness to mobilizing transformational change toward a future free of GBV." - Terrill Kucera, WI-HER Program Manager As we begin the #16Days of Activism Against GBV, we encourage you to learn about USIP's recommendations: https://lnkd.in/ggqwMfb9

Gender-based violence (GBV) isn't only physical. To better prevent GBV from occurring, it is critical to understand what it is so that we can better prevent it. GBV can be: 1) physical 2) sexual 3) emotional / psychological 4) economic 5) spiritual 6) cultural 7) neglect 8) verbal Learn more about identifying GBV and resources for support, as shared by WI-HER Founder Dr. Taroub Harb Faramand, MD, MPH: https://lnkd.in/gB3hyHg6 #16Days #EndGBV #NoExcuse

WI-HER transforms food and agriculture systems by developing and implementing strategies that address inequities and the context-specific challenges of our partners. This often involves amplifying the involvement of women, girls, and youth in food and agriculture value chains and related initiatives to improve health outcomes and economic participation.

"A key to the community influencers’ success in building community buy-in and really building receptiveness for these new activities and new behaviors was ensuring that youth leaders co-led the activities in semi-urban Uganda. Youth are influential members of the community and are critical for increasing the acceptance of new behaviors." - Claire Karlsson, WI-HER Program Manager, on the importance of including stakeholders at all levels -- including youth -- in behavior change activities. When gender-based violence (GBV) interventions are designed, it is vital to consider the unique legal, structural, and socio-cultural barriers that can impact how, and if, individuals seek out services or protection. While this conversation often focuses on girls and women for obvious reasons, we cannot overlook the impact that GBV also has on boys and young men. We are honored to support World Vision's critical research in understanding the vulnerabilities, gendered expectations, and other unique barriers young men and boys face when drivers, risks, and lack of protective factors expose them to increased dangers to child sexual abuse and exploitation.
Gender norms, relations and socialization are pivotal factors influencing individuals' identities and roles within communities. Across various cultures, traditional gender norms and stereotypes contribute significantly to the shaping of experience of girls, boys, women and men, often perpetuating harmful attitudes, behaviors, and experiences of trauma. Boys often face legal and structural barriers that hinder their access to protection and services for victims of sexual abuse. Existing legislation and policies intended to safeguard children often overlook the specific needs and vulnerabilities of boys. In 2024, we launched the #ViolenceAgainstBoys Research engaging the seasoned gender partners WI-HER, LLC and ECPAT International covering Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. The research highlights: ‼️CSEA definitions and laws are inconsistent and inadequate (gender-binary), especially for boys and gender-diverse youth ‼️Lack of skills and knowledge ,available and accessible culturally appropriate to prevent and respond to CSEA against boys and men, including in conflict zones ‼️Harmful gender norms prevent open discussions ‼️Lack of and insufficient information on CSEA and limied evidence-based interventions on CSEA
