#TuesdayTrivia 1989? No, it's not Taylor Swift's multi-platinum album—but these guys have a fan following of their own! 1989 is the year when #WSP Founder David Wilson and Chairman Jim Tillett launched their first #Captive. Here’s Jim’s perspective on how the captive industry has evolved over the past 34 years: "Along with other members of the Alden Risk Management (ARMS) team, Dave and I created a captive called Apex in 1989. This captive allowed us to pursue our entrepreneurial vision of earning profits by reinsuring a portion of the programs we underwrote. Initially, our parent company, John Alden Life, supported the idea, but later had second thoughts and required us to unwind it shortly after launch. However, the entrepreneurial drive didn’t stop there. In the years that followed, many of our team members left to start dozens of successful companies specializing in stop-loss, care management, actuarial consulting, managed care reinsurance, and other areas of risk management. Many of these companies are still thriving today, either as independent businesses or through acquisitions. Meanwhile, the use of captives has grown from a niche tool to one of the fastest-growing segments of the health financing industry." The need for #Captives and #WSP’s entrepreneurial spirit remains as strong as ever! A huge thank you to Jim and Dave for their visionary leadership and for helping shape a better, more innovative health insurance space. Your contributions have made a lasting impact!

Thank you to fellow speakers and attendees for an insightful discussion at the Society of Actuaries event on Cell and Gene Therapy! A huge thank you to Sarah Emond from Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER) for sharing her valuable insights. David Wilson's key takeaways from Sarah's presentation: 1. ICER's Independent Assessment: ICER plays a critical role in providing an objective, unbiased evaluation of new therapies, which helps establish a "fair pricing" range for treatments—completely independent of manufacturer influence. 2. Complex Variables at Play: The assessment of new therapies involves a range of factors, from estimating additional QALYs and cost avoidance to durability of treatment. The use of Markov modeling is central to developing a fair and balanced value range! Also, a big thank you to Ashley Hume from Emerging Therapy Solutions for her thought-provoking insights into the cell and gene therapy pipeline. While the pipeline is robust, Ashley highlighted the complexities we face when it comes to modeling product uptake post-approval. The challenges in predicting real-world adoption rates are proving to be more intricate than we originally anticipated. It was a privilege to engage with such knowledgeable colleagues, and we look forward to continuing the #CGT conversations in the future! sessions. #SOA #WSP #ICER #ETS
