Winter Environmental provided remediation services for two uncontrolled dump areas at a site in South Carolina that were impacted with asbestos-containing material (ACM) and petroleum hydrocarbons. The two phase project included soil excavation, select demolition, structural fill, pipe removal and replacement, and construction support. During the first phase, the Winter Environmental project team safely removed 36,000 cubic yards (CY) of impacted materials, stabilized slopes with a soil-nail system, replaced 160-feet of 36-inch reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) and three manholes, and demolished old structures. Crews of certified asbestos-trained and experienced personnel managed the removal and placement of ACM into lined and sealed dump trucks, separating friable from non-friable material, for transport to permitted landfill disposal facilities. Upon completion of excavation, approximately 40,000 CY of structural fill were placed and compacted. The second phase of the project included stormwater management, hydro-excavation near critical infrastructure, and replacing 248-feet of 18-inch reinforced concrete pipe and one manhole. #EnvironmentalRemediation #WinterEnvironmental #AsbestosAbatement #Demolition #SoilExcavation

We are rolling back the clock with a #ThrowbackThursday Project Spotlight: General Time Athens/Westclox Brownfield Redevelopment in Athens, GA.    Winter Environmental was contracted to perform environmental remediation services in 2019 at the General Time/Westclox facility in Athens, GA, which operated from 1954 to 2000 as a clock manufacturing facility. In 2018, the site was enrolled in the Brownfield Program (BFP) by United Consulting with the submission and approval of a Prospective Purchaser Corrective Action Plan (PPCAP) to address soil and groundwater impacts from historical releases of trichloroethylene (TCE). The PPCAP implementation included select demolition of the existing roof, abatement of asbestos, mold and PCBs, excavation of more than 2,000 tons of soil, construction of a soil-nail shoring system, injection of bioavailable absorbent media, and installation of a vapor intrusion mitigation system (VIMS). Since initial BFP due diligence sampling began in 2017, concentrations of TCE in groundwater at the source location have decreased by more than 99% which demonstrates a sustained and significant reduction.   With a Limitation of Liability secured under the BFP in 2024, the site is now being redeveloped into a mixed-use property featuring adaptive reuse of the facility through preserving 250,000 square feet of the former clock manufacturing facility and introducing restaurants, retail spaces, loft offices, and warehouses, alongside multifamily units and green spaces. Located near Exit 13 of the GA 10 Loop and just two miles from downtown Athens and The University of Georgia, this vibrant hub will connect neighborhoods, businesses, and parks in the area. Anchor tenants like Terrapin Beer Company and Wayfair are already bringing life to the project, which combines history, innovation, and sustainability in a way that truly revitalizes the Athens community.
