From Jacqueline Harounian, Esq. 🪬: Parents all over the New York tri-state area are stressing over new back to office mandates. Since the onset of the pandemic in 2020, many of these parents have long-standing employment with remote and hybrid options. AT&T is one of a large group of big companies that is tightening its return-to-office requirements, ending a hybrid schedule the company had allowed for some employees for the past year. What does this mean for parents that have court ordered custody schedules, and have avoided child care expenses due to remote work schedules? And what about commuting costs? It won’t be pretty. The cost of childcare is exorbitant, and when you add in commuting time, it can be simply unaffordable. Conflict between parents, unemployment, and mental stress is inevitable. Children will be caught in the crossfire of all of this. (There is also a risk that many children will be forced to be at home without supervision for hours on end. As a latchkey kid in the 70s, I still remember the feeling.) Litigation for child support and custody is in cards for many of these parents unless they work together to discuss a fair modification agreement. Litigation is toxic for families. Working out these issues with a family law mediator is the best route for all involved. Lloyd C. After a two year marriage and eight years of divorce proceedings, these world famous celebrities are finally free of one another. Angelina Jolie first filed for divorce in 2016, days after Brad Pitt attacked her and their six children on a private plane. When they first met and became engaged, it was a fairytale. There was no prenup. Today she is 49 and he is 61. Over the years, the custody issues became effectively moot, because the children are teenagers and adults, and under California law, they can choose who they want to live with. Allegedly, Brad has no relationship with the children, and they have changed their last name to disavow him. His media team claims that the children were alienated from him by Angelina. The $500 million marital estate (including a French winery which is embroiled in a nasty litigation) is another matter. It is reported that Angelina waived claims for spousal support and child support. Very likely there are trusts already set up for the children. While Brad has had several romantic relationships over the past eight years, Angelina has not. It appears she has focused mostly on her children and career. Many millions of dollars were spent on legal fees, but the settlement seems very typical, and could have been resolved a long time ago. Emotions seem to have driven this dispute, just like any other contested litigation. Another lesson to be learned is that prenups are the way to go when you have two high powered professionals, plus a blended family with minor children.
