No Women Need Apply. For the first time in 20 years, there will be no women leading House committees. Not one. House Republicans have not selected a single woman to chair a committee in the next Congress. Who will lead instead? White men. No people of color were selected either. Barbara Comstock, a former Republican Congresswoman, summed it up perfectly: “Very fitting in the MAGA Era—No Women Need Apply.” “Women make up more than half the population of this country, but House Republicans didn’t elect a single one to lead a House committee,” said Democratic Representative Don Beyer. And in case you're wondering if the makeup of the current (118th) and upcoming (119th) congress look very different, the answer is no. We had and will have 31 Republican women and 94 Democratic women. Yet in the 118th congress, we had 3 Republican female committee chairs. Progress doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when we demand more and refuse to accept regression. We deserve leadership that reflects the people it serves - with women being squarely positioned in leadership roles.
