From overt harassment to systemic discrimination, women in India’s public health sector continue to face persistent gender-based violence (GBV) challenges rooted in societal norms and institutional gaps. This month, we hosted a thought-provoking webinar addressing this critical issue. The discussion featured Manisha Gupte, a WomenLift Health India mentor and Founder of Mahila Sarvangeen Utkarsh Mandal; Dr. Monalisha Sahu and Priya Das from the 2024 India Leadership Journey Cohort; and Dr. Shubha Nagesh, the ’22 Alumnae Lead. The panel delved into the multifaceted nature of GBV—from microaggressions to sexual harassment—and its far-reaching effects on women’s safety, career progression, and workplace culture. For male allies, it’s not enough to simply mentor and sponsor women; they must actively work to dismantle the barriers that prevent women from seeking support and, just as importantly, confront those who resist allyship. In Part 2 of our two-part series on male allyship, we dive into the challenges male allies face in today’s workplaces, exploring the complexities of being an effective ally and how they can help break down systemic and cultural barriers hindering progress toward gender equality. Additionally, we examine the role of institutions in creating a culture that not only encourages but actively supports male allyship. Read more to explore actionable insights on how to foster meaningful allyship: https://bit.ly/3ZJ062V We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our contributors: Prof. Lukoye Atwoli, Dr. Simon Kigondu, John Cape, Chris Collins, Rabih Torbay, Emmanuel Lamptey, Dr. Anant Bhan, Srinivas Tadepally, Rushabh Hemani and M K Padmakumar. As we approach the end of the year and look ahead to the new one, it’s an ideal time for self-reflection, goal-setting, and focusing on overcoming the challenges we face. WomenLift Health’s research among mid-career women in the health sector shows that many women wait for others to recognize their potential and often undersell their achievements compared to their male counterparts. Imposter syndrome, often fueled by systemic barriers and exclusion, plays a key role in this. Do you ever question your abilities or feel undeserving of your position or power? Join us for our first #SouthernAfricaPowerUp in 2025, “Building Your Power and Battling Imposter Syndrome.” Let’s come together to share our experiences and find ways to overcome imposter syndrome as we enter the new year.
