As the year draws to a close, Mix Interiors reflects on the key lessons shared by some of 2024’s most trailblazing industry leaders, including Julian Cross, Principal and Regional Design Lead at Woods Bagot. Julian highlights the power of storytelling as a fundamental component in achieving well-rounded project outcomes. From Minthis Resort nestled in the hills of Cyprus to the luxurious Synchro Yards residences in Montenegro (pictured), he demonstrates how great stories shape exceptional designs. He shares, "Buildings and cities tell stories, with each new structure adding a fresh chapter to an ever-evolving story. By creating a strong narrative about a place and its people, you can engage with all the project stakeholders in an equitable way, fostering empathy and connection. This approach is a great way to drive your design story from concept to completion, and to your end users, who ultimately become the recipients and future storytellers of the space.” Read all Julian Cross’ lessons in issue #234. https://bit.ly/4fpaTVP #woodsbagot #peoplearchitecture

Sky Bar at Shell House, an upscaled inner-city drinks venue, is named one of the best rooftop bars in Sydney right now 🥂 "The Sydney mega-venue is really four sophisticated venues in one, all distinct from one another and among the pinnacle of the city’s swanky hospitality scene right now... Although it’s the glass-encased Sky Bar that’ll have rooftop bar aficionados all weak at the knees," writes Boss Hunting. The Younghusband Woolstore Redevelopment is of Australia’s most significant adaptive reuse projects. The project demonstrates what exceptional sustainability outcomes can be achieved in embodied carbon through the reimagination of an existing asset. Younghusband has seen improvements to the construction process through a light touch approach, resulting in a radical reduction in embodied carbon relative to a new build. The building is operationally net zero carbon and offsets a significant portion of its own energy use through onsite photovoltaics. It's a positive outcome for the environment and for the community with the preservation of a unique historic asset. Congratulations Built., Irongate and Ivanhoé Cambridge. #adaptivereuse #peoplearchitecture #sustainability #netzero #heritagearchitecture

It's not just quantity in new restaurants that is making news, as Dezeen shares nine design-forward restaurant interiors including the Woods Bagot's Smith & Mills at Rockefeller Center, a perfect example of design-forward dining. With its Art Deco-inspired interiors, vintage elevator-cab panels, and an inviting oval bar, the restaurant embodies the creative spirit driving NYC's post-pandemic restaurant renaissance. Showcasing light, air, and a deep connection to nature, the C Concourse Expansion at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) captures the spirit of the Pacific Northwest. Developed in collaboration with the Port of Seattle, community stakeholders, and our design partner, The Miller Hull Partnership, LLP, the project reflects the region’s character through natural materials, framed views of the outdoors, thoughtfully integrated public art, and a commitment to sustainability. “Our vision was to craft a first-class experience that embodies the essence of the Pacific Northwest,” explains Valentino Del Rio, Woods Bagot Senior Associate. “We drew inspiration from the region's natural beauty, incorporating local stones and woods to create warmth and authenticity, resulting in a uniquely Seattle atmosphere.” At the heart of the design is the 'Tree at SEA,' a structure made from Western Hemlock. Rising from the Grand Staircase, its branches extend across the ceiling to form a protective canopy, serving as a focal point that complements the innovative electrochromic façade. Together, these elements blur the line between interior and exterior, inviting nature in while offering expansive views of the surrounding landscape. "By seamlessly merging architecture and environment, this project transforms the concourse into more than a transit point - it becomes a destination that celebrates the natural splendor of the Pacific Northwest." VMCH’s St. Clare Retirement Precinct has reached a significant milestone, with the frames on all four residential buildings now complete and reaching final height. A topping out ceremony was held at the Studley Park site in Kew on 5 December, attended by architects Woods Bagot, builder partner Hacer Group, members of the VMCH board, Mayor of Boroondara Cr. Sophie Torney, and member for Kew Jess Wilson. The site resides in Melbourne’s affluent east, and Woods Bagot Associate Principal Blair Parkinson says the new precinct incorporates a contemporary interpretation of arts-and-crafts, federation-style homes that characterise the local area. “We’ve taken a contextual approach to the design, borrowing from the mansionette vernacular of Kew and pulling that through into the new built elements,” says Parkinson. “Historic details have been reinterpreted in the contemporary built forms, including symmetry, rhythmic brickwork and gabled rooves, combined with state-of-the art amenities including a library, pool, wellness facilities, cinema, and community gardens, to name a few.” The project has broken records for retirement off-plan sales, with 70 percent of apartments reserved a year ahead of project completion, which is slated for 2025.
