  • Exciting news from Senegal! The Ministère de l'Agriculture et de l'Élevage du Sénégal (MASAE) has signed an agreement with WPF partner Couvoir Amar under the APMI Program, known locally as Project Bi. This initiative aims to transform the lives of 500,000 rural women over the next five years by empowering them through sustainable and innovative poultry farming practices. With the support of the Senegalese government, this collaboration will expand efforts to empower women, improve livelihoods, and drive sustainable development across rural communities in Senegal. • Our APMI Technical Director, Joe Antonio, recently visited Sierra Leone to collaborate with our partners at Leecon on launching a new Parent Stock monitoring system using CommCare. This new monitoring system equips our private-sector partners with critical insights on the performance of their Parent Stock and hatchery, helping them optimize farm management and boost profitability. Learn more about the importance of monitoring systems in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/dANDNQ2k A special thank you to Qatar Fund for Development for their financial support in making the APMI program a success in Sierra Leone!

  • Following a recent marketing meeting, the Masuka Savings Group from Kachenja village in Mtilizi, Zambia, made the decision to transition from raising broilers to dual-purpose birds. This vibrant group of 24 women and 8 men is eager to explore the benefits of this switch. The group plans to sell the birds at four weeks within their cooperative for ZMW 70 (~$2.50) each—many of the birds are already reserved by community members! After calculating production costs at ZMW 45 (~$1.65) per bird, they’re looking at a profit of ZMW 25 (~$0.91) per bird. The energy and excitement were infectious, and we can't wait to see where this journey takes them!   Hybrid Poultry Farm (Z) Limited Learn more about the APMI Program here: https://lnkd.in/dW8qigms

  • Last week, Brooder Units in Senegal began selling 28-day-old dual-purpose chickens to small-scale farmers for the very first time. Pictured here, Field Service Representative Ousmane Dione and Brooder Unit Nina Coly deliver the first brooded birds in the Mbour region.   This marks an important milestone for the APMI program and Couvoir Amar as farmers start to see firsthand the benefits of dual-purpose poultry. • In Tanzania, Brooder Units have discovered that raising dual-purpose poultry (DPP) is not only more profitable but also easier to market to small-scale farmers than other breeds, leading to stronger business outcomes throughout the value chain. Tanzanian Brooder Unit, Dorothi Wisiko from Iringa explains, “Previously I raised broilers. Now I am brooding Dual-Purpose chickens (DPP), I have reduced my input and management costs. I have a more reliable market selling brooded DPP to local farmers. I don’t sell all my chickens, to sell cockerels later for a higher price and keep hens for eggs.  I transport my eggs to Ruaha National Park and sell them to lodges for a great price.”  Profitability at every level of the value chain is key to ensuring long-term sustainability.  With donor funding and direct WPF support now concluded in Tanzania, profitability at every level of the value chain is essential to sustain the benefits of DPP for years to come. • We were on the ground in Lesotho last week, meeting with our Curriculum Working Group and the Rural Self-Help Development Association (RSDA) as part of the USDA’s Food for Progress STEPS program, implemented by Land O'Lakes Venture37. During these working sessions, we presented the initial training curriculums we developed with our partner, KwaZulu Natal Poultry Training Institute (KZNPI) for both dual-purpose and single-use birds. These training programs are key to empowering STEPS participants and expanding access to single and dual-purpose poultry in Lesotho. A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who has contributed to this initiative and shared their invaluable insights! Learn more about the STEPS program here: https://lnkd.in/dCnQYTmA
