What do you know about newspaper grammar? Newspapers sometimes use the present simple tense (the ones with 's'; eat's', stand's', show's', etc.) to report past events, particularly in headlines. This is what I mean: 1. Nigerian refuse's' to stand for new national anthem. 2. Firefighter fail's' to rescue family from burning building. 3. Train station shut's' down due to repairs. 🟣 Why are headlines written like this? This is what brings us to another punctuation mark: BRACKETS [ ] ( ) { } In a nutshell, brackets are encapsulating. . . Whenever you use a bracket in a sentence, it tells the reader that 1. Clarity: You are adding clarification to the previous sentence or phrase. 2. Correction: It also shows that a correction has been made to a text. 3. Grouping: That you have grouped the words. 4. Depth: You have included an in-depth information to the aforesaid sentence Here are some examples. (I think this is one of my favourite sections - examples, yay!) • I left the house this morning (still not sure where to head first) with my water can and hand fan. • Moi-moi (Beans cake) and custard is a good meal to have for breakfast. • The South-South zone in Nigeria is richly blessed with natural endowments (especially oil, seafood and the like).
