About us

WTVI PBS Charlotte has served citizens in the Central Piedmont since it signed on the air on August 27, 1965. First licensed to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, the license was transferred to an agency created by the school system and Mecklenburg County — the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Broadcasting Authority in 1981. The Federal Communications license was transferred to Central Piedmont Community College in July 2012. WTVI-PBS Charlotte currently offers high quality, noncommercial, educational programs and services ranging from award-winning children’s programming to groundbreaking documentaries and from original performances to informative local public service programming. WTVI-PBS Charlotte reaches more than 380,000 households in its 13-county service area in both North and South Carolina with three broadcast channels (WTVI-HD, Create and MHz Worldview) in addition to a cable educational channel and web services. WTVI-PBS Charlotte is Charlotte’s PBS service, providing education, culture, and citizenship across all electronic media platforms to serve the public interest and further the mission of its parent institution, Central Piedmont Community College.
