Strengthening institutional capacity to empower frontline communities to lead change for environmental justice.

About us

The Yale Center for Environmental Justice is committed to strengthening institutional capacity to empower frontline communities to lead change by catalyzing partnerships and expanding interdisciplinary research, teaching, and practice in environmental justice. In addition, YCEJ promotes an expanded definition of environmental justice, recognizing the lived experiences and interconnected systemic inequities that shape environmental inequality. YECJ is a joint undertaking between Yale School of the Environment and Yale Law School, in partnership with the Yale Center for the Study of Race, Indigeneity, and Transnational Migration. YCEJ brings this perspective to four priority areas. First, to improve environmental decision-making using different disciplines to address areas of process failure. Second, to create opportunities for engaged research and experiential learning in partnership with local environmental justice groups. Third, to create links to indigenous environmental groups globally and tribal nations in the United States to address environmental justice issues as they arise in this specific legal and policy context. Fourth, to advance just transitions in energy and food systems in the face of climate disruption with a focus on the connection between clean energy, food security, and food sovereignty.

Executive Director, Yale Center on Climate Change & Health

It's not easy processing this week, but being in community with a few hundred environmental justice elders and youngers surely was a balm. Thanks to the Yale Center for Environmental Justice for creating this brave space for mourning and movement-building that we all needed, even if you had hoped for a more full-throated joyful occasion. I enjoyed the opportunity to share a bit about how the Yale Center on Climate Change and Health -- and the broader global climate and health movement -- can support grassroots environmental and climate justice initiatives through partnership in community-engaged research, education, and policy advocacy. As our advisory board member Peggy Shepard said, we were out-organized and must start organizing immediately, and institutions like Yale and philanthropy need to step up and help the most under-resourced. This was an emotionally draining day and week, but I feel spiritually energized to keep fighting for "resistance, resilience, and thriving."

🌍 The Yale University, Yale Center for Environmental Justice , themed ✨️✨️Environmental Joy✨️✨️ finished today, and I am still reflecting on the incredible impact this global gathering had on all who attended. From the moment I stepped onto Yale's campus, it was clear that this was more than just a conference. Attendees from every corner of the globe came together with a shared passion for environmental justice, creating a vibrant and collaborative atmosphere. 🌱 Throughout the sessions, we explored the intersections of joy and justice in environmental work, reminding us of the beauty and resilience that exists within our collective journey toward a sustainable and equitable world. The ideas shared, connections made, and insights gained have left me deeply inspired and motivated to continue this critical work. A heartfelt thank you to the organizers Abey Loving Gerald Torres , speakers Aja DeCoteau Wizipan Garriott, and each participant for making this experience both transformative and uplifting!
