  • In her book, "We Will Rest!: The Art of Escape," Tricia Hersey conveys an urgent message: If we do not take rest seriously and divorce ourselves from capitalism, we will die much sooner than we should, writes YES! executive editor Evette Dionne. "Rest is essential to our long-term survival as individuals and a collective. Birthing a creative renaissance requires rest that isn't reliant on productivity." • Despite all the national and regional representation, significant underrepresentation of African American women memorials still remains. With the addition of the Harriet Tubman National Historic Park in 2009, there are now three African American women represented in units of the National Park Service—less than 1% of all designations. But a national movement of African American public memory crafters has resisted erasure and uplifted the legacies of Black women. Read more about their work 👇 #BlackHistory

  • ▶️ WATCH: A guaranteed income pilot project called the Chicago Future Fund (CFF) provided $500 a month from March 2023 to February 2024 to 100 formerly incarcerated individuals. The project is based in the city's west side, where high unemployment and high rates of police activity, arrests, and incarceration have challenged local residents. Rachel Pyon, who leads the CFF pilot programs, spoke about the program's promising results for employment, housing, stress relief, and more. #Housing #Chicago

  • ▶️ WATCH: How do we think about creating a world free of policing and prisons, a world where the constant fear of state violence is a thing of the past? For Gina Dent, Ph.D., co-director of Visualizing Abolition, adopting an abolition mindset shouldn't just be relegated to the criminal justice system. Dent spoke with YES! senior editor Sonali Kolhatkar about how society as a whole can meet abolitionist ideals. Tap below to hear their conversation.

  • Two New York co-ops were "one of the United States' greatest success stories in social housing," writes Jonathan Tarleton, urban planner and oral historian. Social housing is supposed to be kept "outside the market, decommodified, permanently affordable, and controlled by its residents," Tarleton notes. But a controversial loophole to encourage more rental development is facing residents with a choice on whether to cash out or privatize. Tarleton explains what's at stake in this excerpt from his new book, "Homes for Living: The Fight for Social Housing and a New American Commons." #Housing

  • Disruption is a vital tool of resistance, write Mark Engler and Paul Engler. Disruption can highlight issues that "might otherwise be downplayed or ignored." But while some disruptive actions can lead to victory, others can self-isolate and alienate activists from the wider public. So how can organizers know when polarization around specific issues is necessary? And how can movements know when they are using it effectively? Tap the link below to learn more. #Protest #Injustice

  • WATCH: Donald Trump's administration has dropped all pretense at being anything other than a white supremacist institution, blaming everything from the devasting Los Angeles fires to the deadly Washington D.C. plane crash on "diversity, equity, and inclusion," writes senior editor Sonali Kolhatkar. With DEI becoming the latest right-wing bogeyman, Trump has dismantled such federal government initiatives within days of taking office. But that does not mean efforts toward racial equity must end in every sector. Independent equity and culture consultant Gabriela Valle explains what DEI means and how equity initiatives can and should continue. Watch the full interview ⬇️ #DEI

  • After a police officer fatally shot Collette Flanagan's 25-year old son Clinton Allen in 2013, she founded the protest group Mothers Against Police Brutality (MAPB). "I just felt compelled... [I wanted to] start a group where moms [who have lost a child to police violence] could meet. I remember feeling so isolated. I just couldn't break through that grief," Flanagan says. Now, more than a decade after Allen's death, MAPB focuses on advocating for better policy around police brutality—like eliminating qualified immunity for police officers—and training mothers to advocate within their local communities.
