June 28 marks the 53rd birthday of Elon Musk, the billionaire known for his technology-focused ambitions across the worlds of electric vehicles, space exploration, social media and now A.I. One this day nine years ago, at Musk’s 44th birthday party, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO got into an unexpected argument with his longtime friend, Google co-founder Larry Page, that would shape the landscape of generative A.I. as we know it today. Nestled between massive nondescript warehouses housing a concrete factory and a roofing plant sits a massive 100,000-square-foot farm with the potential to put out more than 4.5 million pounds of greens every year. Unlike other farms you drive past, with miles and miles of open fields, you wouldn’t know that this farm, operated by the startup Plenty®, existed. It’s hidden in plain sight and home to cutting-edge technologies borrowed from other industries, including auto manufacturing, bioengineering, genetics, robotics, automation, agriculture and even energy. "The goal is to take the back-breaking work out of agriculture, and still offer really great produce at an affordable price," said Plenty's director of sales Andy Hotchkiss. At the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month, the iPhone maker introduced Apple Intelligence, marking a milestone in the tech giant’s foray into generative A.I. While Apple’s history with A.I. began with the introduction of its digital assistant, Siri, in 2011, it has since lagged behind competitors like Amazon and Google. With the launch of Apple Intelligence and a ChatGPT integration in partnership with OpenAI, the company now aims to reshape the “conscious A.I.” market. In an era where data privacy concerns are paramount, Apple's closed-ecosystem distinction could offer a significant market advantage. Read more: https://lnkd.in/ePGszHBb By Victor Dey

SHEIN, the Chinese-founded fast-fashion retailer once valued at $100 billion, is looking to file with U.K. regulators to list an initial public offering on the London Stock Exchange. Six months ago, Shein filed paperwork with the U.S. SEC to go public in New York. Pressured by political pushback and regulatory scrutiny around companies with Chinese ties, the e-commerce giant has decided to list elsewhere. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gNc4DAqv By Shreyas Sinha

Modern American capitalism makes rich corporate titans massively richer but leaves the rest of us behind. The economically irrational but psychologically rational objective of preserving their elitist club is a plausible reason for this choice. Another possibility is that these powerful titans are missing the fact that the exclusive system they preserve has been extremely costly not just for America but for them personally. Ghost jobs and spam jobs—everything from jobs that don't actually exist to jobs that remain open for indeterminate periods of time—are not a new phenomenon, but there’s evidence that they are on the rise. A 2022 survey revealed that 68 percent of employers had listings that were active for more than 30 days, and 10 percent of those listings were up for six months or more, with 20 percent of managers not planning to fill those positions until the next year. Ghost jobs not only waste job seekers' valuable time but also muddy labor data and make it unclear just how robust the job market is. Read more: https://lnkd.in/g5Wk9YMF
