A Candid article highlights the importance of intersectional approaches to gender equality. Richard Reeves details how Melinda French Gates awarded funds to several individuals working with programs focused on gender equality. While she prioritizes her funding for programs working with women and girls, she acknowledges that addressing the challenges of boys and men, who Reeves works with through the initiative Rise Together, can strengthen society. Advocates say investing in mental health, education, and fatherhood initiatives for boys and men complements ongoing efforts for women and girls. An intersectional approach, prioritizing communities most impacted by inequalities and addressing labor shortages in fields like education and healthcare can lead to a more equitable future. In this reflective article, educator and author Tom Deignan recounts his experiences as a high school teacher in Brooklyn and how the works of August Wilson, particularly Fences and The Piano Lesson transformed his classroom experience. These plays filled with important literary themes sparked lively discussions among his students, helping them explore complex questions about parenting, forgiveness, and identity. Deignan has since refined his teaching approach by encouraging students to share stories, integrating literature that resonated with their lives, and using storytelling as a bridge to confront larger societal and personal challenges.
