Want to feel inspired today? Read this amazing story that demonstrates the power of nonprofits. Colaborativa La Milpa activated existing infrastructure to help people affected by Hurricane Helene in western NC. With their extensive and coordinated networks, the nonprofit assists residents with various needs, from home repair to childcare to distribution of food and information. Colaborativa La Milpa primarily serves the Latine community in the region, but their hurricane relief and recovery efforts are reaching many more people in western NC. "We are here to help everyone, to support whoever. We’re human beings helping other human beings,” said Geny Hernández Lopez, co-director of the nonprofit.

Voted in. Terrorized out. Many North Carolinians don't know the story of the 1898 Wilimington race massacre — the only successful coup d’état in the history of the US. Just before the turn of the 20th century, Wilmington had a democratically-elected, multi-racial government. But in November 1898, self-described white supremacists violently overthrew that government. Black residents were murdered and thousands were banished. This violent and deliberate destruction of Black political and economic power has had lasting effects in Wilmington, the state and the country. This week, American Experience PBS and PBS North Carolina released a new documentary that sheds light on what happened in Wilmington. The story of the Wilmington race massacre was suppressed for decades until descendants and scholars began to investigate. The film features interviews with many of those descendants — Black and white — as they work to uncover the truth. You can see the full film here: https://lnkd.in/gT5bxuVj
